Golf Course Maintenance

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
‘NEWSLETTER’
MAY 2008

Dear Member / Property Owner,

Following on from the ‘The Golf Course Superintendents News Letter’ sent to you in March which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana course in April, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in May 2008.

APRIL COURSE MAINTNANCE UPDATE

Hollow Coring Greens April 22nd & 23rd

The greens were hollow cored as per the schedule with 13 mm tines and top dressed. Only 8 days since this schedule of greens maintenance the greens have already partially recovered and they are expected to heal completely within another week.

Hollow Coring Tees

The tees have been hollow cored as per the schedule. This maintenance programme provides aerification which results in healthy turf and root growth improving the quality of the playing surfaces.

Driving Range Tee

The grass driving range practice tee has been hollow cored, topdressed and over seeded as per the schedule to reestablish the playing surface for use later in the season. This area is closed until 1st October and as usual, the high quality Huxley practice mats are available for members use during this time.

Hole 2 Cart Track Modification & Grass Extension

The new bridge and relocation of the cart track work has been completed. The original cart track has been removed and replaced with desert hard pan to allow additional plant material to be incorporated into these areas shortly. The greens approach area has been enlarged by an additional 20m towards the tee complex. This area will be established with grass over the coming months.

Irrigation Modifications

The schedule of irrigation works has been deferred to May.

MAY COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

Hollow Coring Greens May 20th & 21st

As previously advised, the second scheduled hollow coring of the greens will take place in May. This is an essential part of greens maintenance. The hollow coring of the greens is a practice which is scheduled each year to both maintain and enhance the playing quality of the putting surfaces with which we are accustomed at The Indiana. This practice creates the required environment for strong vigorous roots to grow, the very essence of golf course maintenance.

Hole 2 Irrigation Modification & Grass Extension

The modification to the existing irrigation system is to take place; this will involve additional sprinkler heads being introduced to allow the new approach area to ‘grow-in’. The new approach has been extended approximately 20m towards the tee complex and will be seeded and ‘grown-in’ during the months of May and June. The introduction of the remaining plant material will be carried out shortly thereafter.

Irrigation Modifications

Modification work to the irrigation system on green surrounds 1 and 18 and on tee complexes 5 and 15 to improve the efficiency of the irrigation coverage and thus the quality of the grass will continue. Trenching machinery and other equipment will be used in these areas, which shall be identified for the golfer, however please be aware of open trenches whilst work is carried out.

Important Maintenance Schedule for 2008

In the knowledge that all property owners and members need to have as much notice as possible with respect to particular aspects of the golf course maintenance schedule that may temporarily effect the playing conditions of the greens surface, thus enabling them to plan particular holidays accordingly, please see below the outstanding scheduled dates for ‘Greens Hollow Coring’ during 2008:

November 24th & 25th

This particular programme is an essential part of golf course maintenance. This practice creates the required environment for strong vigorous roots to grow, the very essence of golf course maintenance.
