Golf Course Maintenance

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

‘NEWS LETTER’

NOVEMBER 2012

Dear Member / Property Owner,

Following on from the ‘The Golf Course Superintendents News Letter’ sent to you in September which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana Course in October, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in November 2012.

OCTOBER COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Bermuda Grass Encroachment

The Men’s Tee 1 has been turfed where the Bermuda had encroached. The Men’s Tee 6 and 11, Ladies Tees 1, 5, 16 and 18 and the Championship Tees of holes 4, 5, 6, and 18 will be turfed in November.

Annual Golf Course Overseeding and Sand Topdressing Program

Additional overseeding and sand topdressing has been completed as per the schedule throughout the golf course. White half moon metal stakes have been placed around certain areas of the golf course to help control golf traffic that disrupts seed germination.

Golf Course Rivers

The Powder Creek river by the 15th green has been cleared of debris which has improved the appearance of the hole. Powder creek, in between holes 5 and 6 is still drying and has been sprayed with Roundup.

Driving Range Tees

The driving range grass tee was opened as per the schedule. Please be reminded that during certain periods, the tee will be closed to allow maintenance to take place. This involves sanding and overseeding, which in turn will allow the grass tee to be used more frequently.

NOVEMBER COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

Hollow Coring Greens

As previously advised, please be reminded that the greens will be hollow cored on Monday 5th & Tuesday 6th November, and the practice area closed on Wednesday 7th November until 3pm. The hollow coring of the greens is a practice which is scheduled each year to both maintain and enhance the playing quality of the putting surfaces with which we are accustomed at The Indiana. This practice creates the required environment for strong vigorous roots to grow, the very essence of golf course maintenance.

Hole 15th Modification and Temporary Green Notice.

On 31st October 2012, a new temporary green was opened for daily play on the fairway side of the lake.

At this time work will commence on construction of a newly extended green with a scheduled completion date of 26th November. The newly turfed green will require 8 weeks ‘Grow-In’ time to establish itself and therefore, subject to weather conditions, the scheduled date of the re-opening the green is 1st February 2013.

Bermuda Grass Encroachment

The Men’s tee 6 and 11, the Ladies’ tee 1, 5, 16 and 18 and the Championship tee of holes 4, 5, 6 and 18 will be turfed to complete the renovation program of the tees.

Overseeding 50m Golf Academy Practice Green

The 50m green on the driving range is being renovated to improve its visual aspect from the driving range tee. The green will be overseeded and topdressed. The green’s flag will be removed to reduce the numbers of golf balls landing on the green during grow in.

16th Hole New Fairway Extension

The newly established fairway extension to hole 16 has grown in very well. During the next few weeks it’s height of cut will be reduced to fairway height and it will remain as Ground Under Repair.

Golf Course Rivers

Powder Creek running in between holes 5 and 6 continues to dry out. Once dry, the extensive vegetation can be cleared. This is an extremely slow process and will take many months to complete.

2013 Greens Hollow Coring Dates

In the knowledge that all Property Owners and Members need to have as much notice as possible concerning particular aspects of the golf course maintenance schedule that may temporarily effect the playing conditions of the greens surface, thus enabling them to plan particular holidays accordingly, please see below the new hollow coring dates for 2013.

Monday 22nd April, Monday 20th May, and Monday 4th November*

*In Addition the Putting Green, Chipping Green and Driving Range Tee will be closed for hollow coring on first Wednesday respectively until 3pm.

This particular program is an essential part of golf course maintenance. This practice creates the required environment for strong vigorous roots to grow, the very essence of golf course maintenance.

You will be able to keep up to date with the full tournament and social schedule, format and any additions, information of how to enter, and much, much more by visiting either our official website www.almanzora.com or alternatively, reading the notice boards in both the Men’s and Ladies locker rooms in the Clubhouse whilst at the Resort.

We and the staff at Desert Springs are looking forward to seeing you on The Indiana course in the near future.
