Golf Course Maintenance

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
‘NEWSLETTER’
OCTOBER 2008

Dear Member / Property Owner,

Following on from the ‘The Golf Course Superintendents News Letter’ sent to you in August which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana course in September, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in October 2008.

SEPTEMBER COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Foreign Grass Encroachment
As per the schedule, all areas of the golf course where foreign grass encroachment has persisted have been sprayed once again. Where successful eradication of such encroachment has taken place, the programme of overseeding and topdressing has been completed. Please try to avoid walking through these areas as new seed is germinating. These areas are deemed ground under repair (G.U.R).

Hole 2 Grass Extension Grow In Program
After the driest 10 months since the construction of the Indiana golf course in year 2000, much needed natural rain fall in late September and lower autumn temperatures are finally allowing the rye grass approach to grow-in. Please be advised that the fenced off area of the new approach may be soft due to multiply irrigation cycles throughout the day whilst we continue to establish this new grass area. Please tread carefully if entering this area to retrieve golf balls. This area is also deemed as ground under repair (G.U.R).

Edging Fairways & Green Surrounds
The maintenance crew have started to edge the fairways and green surrounds on the Indiana. This programme enhances and defines the edge between the grass and hard pan. This schedule of work will continue throughout October.

OCTOBER COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

Edging Fairways & Green Surrounds
The maintenance teams will be edging the remaining fairway and green complexes on the golf course. This will further enhance and define the aesthetic appearance of the golf course grass areas.

Grass Driving Range Tee
After much thought and for the additional benefit for all members, the grass driving range will only be used for scheduled events from the Tournament events calendar and prearranged National and County squad team bookings. Opening the tee permanently for the winter 2007/08 season proved to be counter productive, as an acceptable recovery rate was not possible due to its extensive use. The members still have the use of the excellent Huxley range mats at both ends of the driving range tee complex.

Important Maintenance Schedule For 2008
In the knowledge that all property owners and members need to have as much notice as possible with respect to particular aspects of the golf course maintenance schedule that may temporarily effect the playing conditions of the greens surface, thus enabling them to plan particular holidays accordingly, please see below the outstanding scheduled date for ‘Greens Hollow Coring’ during 2008:

November 24th & 25th
This particular programme is an essential part of golf course maintenance. This practice creates the required environment for strong vigorous roots to grow, the very essence of golf course maintenance.

You will be able to keep up to date with the full tournament and social schedule, format and any additions, information of how to enter, and much, much more by visiting either our official website www.almanzora.com or alternatively, reading the notice boards in both the Men’s and Ladies locker rooms in the Clubhouse whilst at the Resort.

We and the staff at Desert Springs are looking forward to seeing you on The Indiana course in the near future.

Kind regards, Kind regards,
Simon Coaker Anthony Brooks
Director of Golf Golf Course Superintendent
