Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter December

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT’S

NEWS LETTER

December 2016

Dear Member / Property Owner,

Following on from the Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter sent to you in October, which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana Course in November, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in December 2016.

NOVEMBER COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Hollow Coring Greens

The greens were solid tined and topdressed heavily as part of the yearly aerification program. The solid tining has helped the greens recover quicker in the cooler weather experienced in the early part of November. The greens have totally recovered.

Hollow Coring Collars

The hollow coring of the green’s collars was completed as per the schedule. This aerification program has helped the collars recover after the summer months.

Hollow Coring Green’s Approaches

Due to maintenance scheduling, the hollow coring of the approaches has been delayed until after the golf events in November and early December.

DECEMBER COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

18th Green Approach

The 18th green approach will continue to be closed to all trolley and machinery traffic. The approach and collars are now showing signs of recovery after restricting golf trolley and machinery traffic. The approach and green complex surround are now only being cut with pedestrian mowers to reduce mechanical stress to turf grass. Once a strong turf grass stand has established and the collar has completely recovered, the movement of golf traffic can be assessed. The approach is not GUR but restricting additional traffic wear will improve its recovery rate.

Verti Draining Fairways

The program of verti-draining the fairways will start in December. This particular aspect of golf course maintenance is both extremely necessary and time consuming, so we ask you to please bear with us until its completion. Disruption to play, as always, will be kept to an absolute minimum.

Hollow Coring Approaches

The green’s approaches will be hollow cored, topdressed and overseeded. These procedures will help reduce soil compaction and improve both turf grass quality and playing conditions in front of each green.

Sprinkler Heads

As a consequence of maintenance programs, the sprinkler heads gradually over time become lower than the turf playing surface. The golf course maintenance staff will be raising the sprinkler heads to improve irrigation water coverage and uniformity. Please be aware that this schedule of works will continue whilst golfers are playing, however staff will be protected from golf balls by protective netting.
