Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter June

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT’S

NEWS LETTER

June 2017

Dear Member / Property Owner,

Following on from the Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter sent to you in April, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out in May and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in June 2017.

MAY COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Driving Range Closure

The planned schedule of works was sucessfully carried out and completed. The driving range was open for play on Saturday 20th May.

Greens Hollow Coring

The greens were aerated for the first time using the Air2G2 on Wednesday 25th and completed by Friday 26th May. The greens were rolled after aeration to improve smoothness. Water movement throughout root zone profile has been measurably improved.

Bunker Edging and Compaction

The bunkers are now being hand raked using a new procedure, which has helped increase sand compaction at the bunker edges. There is now a reduced potential of having a plugged ball in the bunkers.

Green’s Collar Turfing and Seeding

Improvements to the golf course collars will be on going during the summer months to help improve the playing surfaces near the green.

JUNE COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

Hydro Jet Greens

The greens will be aerified with the “Hydrojet” machine. This system of aeration creates small pin sized air holes in the green by the use of high-pressure water, improving water and air movement throughout the soil profile. There will be no adverse effect to the quality of the green playing surface during this time.

Fresh Water Irrigation

To reduce the impact of salty irrigation water and salt accumulation on the putting surfaces, the golf greens will be hand watered with fresh water irrigation.  The large volume of water used will help flush soluble salts beyond the root zone and increase soil aeration. Hand watering will take place early in the early morning and disruption to play will be kept to an absolute minimum.

Hand Watering Greens and Tees

Throughout the summer months hand watering of the greens and tees will take place. Please be advised that this is an essential part of summer maintenance to improve soil moisture consistency and reduces water use. Hand watering cannot be stopped during play for this reason.
