GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

‘NEWS LETTER’

APRIL 2013

Dear Member / Property Owner,

Following on from the ‘The Golf Course Superintendents News Letter’ sent to you in February which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana Course in March, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in April 2013.

MARCH COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Crab Grass Control

The fairways and tees have been sprayed with a Pre-emergence herbicide as scheduled. The Indiana course was closed on three occasions after 3pm to allow spraying to continue.

Renovation of the Golf Academy Bunker

The small pot bunker at the chipping green has been renovated as per the maintenance schedule.

Driving Range Grass Tee

The grass tee at the Golf Academy has been closed for play since March 18th to allow for turf to recover.

ARPIL COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

Crab Grass Control

The fairways will be sprayed with a pre-emergence herbicide, which will prevent the germination of the crab grass seed during the warm spring months. The efficiency and performance of the herbicide is greatly improved with late afternoon spraying, followed by night time irrigation. This will virtually eliminate the germination of the weed seed and prevent the product being walked onto the greens of the Indiana Course. The second application of the herbicide is scheduled to start on Monday 29th April. The golf course will be closed after 3pm on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th April.

The Club House Golf Reception staff will have any further playing restrictions displayed accordingly. As normal, disruption to play will be keep to an absolute minimum.

Driving Range Grass Tee

The driving range grass tee will be used during the Easter golfing period; thereafter the tee will be closed for maintenance. This will involve the verticutting and overseeding of the tee surface. This is the optimum time to establish new seed, which will improve the recovery rate of the playing surface. The tee will reopen after recovery.

Hollow Coring Greens

As previously advised, please be reminded that the greens will be hollow cored on Monday 22nd April and the practice area will be closed on Wednesday 24th April until 3pm. The hollow coring of the greens is a maintenance practice which is scheduled each year to both maintain and enhance the playing quality of the putting surfaces with which we are accustomed at The Indiana. This practice creates the required environment for strong vigorous roots to grow, the very essence of golf course maintenance.
