NEW YERAS EVE MIXED PAIRS: 31/12/2011

Desert Springs hosted the last tournament of the Calendar Year on a beautiful morning. A total field of 18 pairs, including 15 mixed pairs would battle for the victory before New Years Eve.

On second position, Pat Wood and Sue Wood scored 38 points, one behind Elaine and Kris Gray who took the victory. They had a great golfing day with 39 points, which were sufficient to overcome their opponents.

On the overall competition, Michael Wherlock and Roger Butters turned a magnificent scorecard with 40 points, winning once again on the Indiana Course.

The Prize Presentation was held at the Clubhouse and hosted by Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn.

BRADLEY'S HUGS FUN TOURNAMENT: 30/12/2011

The Golf 4 Woman Mixed American Greensomes comprised a great field of 10 pairs competing in the American Greensomes format competition held on Friday 9th December.

It was a beautiful sunny morning at Desert Springs, with the Indiana course in fabulous conditions after a mild Autumn.

Colin Padfield and Sandra Larkin managed their games to play an impressive round achieving 37 points, allowing them to win the tournament by 4 points, followed by Dot Harris and Martin Reard in second place. Eugenio Perales and Isabel Haro were third and still won a prize, with 31 points.

The prize giving was held after the Menu del Dia Lunch at El Torrente, hosted by Desert Springs Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

Christmas Individual Stableford: 28/12/2011

A final field of 30 players challenged the Indiana course on a beautiful mild morning at Desert Springs. The format played was Individual Stableford, which would indeed guarantee several good scores

After battling on the course, Michael Wherlock took the win on Category 2, after countback, with a total of 35 points, followed by José Angel Muñoz and Marcos Azpiazu who finished third one point behind. On Category 1, Connor McCauley claimed the victory with 39 points. Five points behind, Ian Thornton finished second and David Mathewson was third with 32 points.

Brenda Clark-Whittle and Jim Kendall won the respective Nearest to the Pin contests on the 8th Hole.

The prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse and hosted by the Competitions Committee Member Stephen Armstrong and the Golf Operations Manager, José Ignacio Olea.

MIXED AMERICAN GREENSOMES: 09/12/2011

The Golf 4 Woman Mixed American Greensomes comprised a great field of 10 pairs competing in the American Greensomes format competition held on Friday 9th December.

It was a beautiful sunny morning at Desert Springs, with the Indiana course in fabulous conditions after a mild Autumn.

PRESIDENT'S CUP: 06/11/2011

On November 6th Desert Springs hosted the Presidents Cup, distinguished club competition where those wanting to win would have to achieve serious scoring.
With a field of 16 players, the Indiana Course was in great shape during such Autumn morning.

Finishing third, John Fry scored 29 points which weren’t enough to claim a victory. One point ahead, Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf finished second, still five points behind Larry Doran who was the overall winner. Larry´s 35 points were sufficient to claim the Cup and add one more win to his background.

Prizes were presented at the Clubhouse by the Desert Springs Club Committee.

ALL SAINTS DAY STABLEFORD: 01/11/2011

A field of 16 participants played the All Saints Day Stableford on November 1st. The Indiana course was in pristine condition with the weather perfect for good scoring.

The competition was played in a Stableford format, and many impressive scores were posted in this occasion.

The event winner was Hugh Mullins with 39 points Net. Only one point behind was Mike Thorpe who finished second. Third position was for Patrick Dunphy with 37 points and therefore another handicap cut!

This particular event is always played on the same date, and therefore golfers will have to wait until All Saints Day-2012 for revenge!

The prize giving hosted by Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Competitions Committee Member Stephen Armstrong was held at the Clubhouse.

PAST CAPTAIN'S TEAM CHALLENGE: 24/10/2011

On October 24th Desert Springs hosted the Past Captains Team Challenge, during a warm Fall morning. This competition is quite peculiar since every past Club Captain selects a team for that day; without a doubt it is a great way to honor those who have represented Desert Springs Golf Club.

The winning team was represented by 2006 Club Captain Pat Craig, including: Camillus Muldowney, John Fry, Stephen Armstrong, Elaine Gray, Anthony Clements and Wikkie de Graaf.

The Prize Presentation was held at the Desert Springs Clubhouse and hosted after lunch by the past Club Captain Phil Lockyer.

CAPTAIN'S CHARITY DAY: 23/10/2011

A final field of 18 teams entered the 2011 Captain´s Charity Day at Desert Springs Resort.

Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf was an exceptional ambassador and turned the tournament into an enjoyable experience for all participants.
It was a sunny morning at Desert Springs, where the Indiana course witnessed some magnificent scores on a very special day for the Captain´s Charities.

The format of the competition was 2-Ball Texas Scramble, where teams of 4 players would play in two pairs and add their scores. The winning team formed by Niall, Susan, John and Yvonne Morrison returned 87 points, to claim the victory after an impressive round of golf. After a magnificent golf round, the team formed by Freddie Beames, Wikkie de Graaf, Roger Butters and Duncan Boston finished runner-up on the event after countback, with 82 points. The Taylor family, with Paul, Lynne, Carey and Alex finished third on the event.

Presentation was held at the Crocodile Club during a Caribbean evening that included costumes and live music.

AUTUMN TROPHY: 21/10/11

The Autumn Trophy comprised a great field of 52 entrants competing in the Stableford format competition held on Friday 21st October.

It was a beautiful sunny day at Desert Springs, the course was in perfect condition and many low handicappers had signed up to win the Trophy!

Marcos Azpiazu was the overall winner scoring 38 points. One point behind, second position was for Alex Taylor and Anthony Clements finished third with 36 points. Due to the great field there were 2 Men Categories and a Ladies Category as well.

The prize giving was held at the Clubhouse, hosted by the Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf, Competition Committee Members Stephen Armstrong and Gerard Ulijn and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

CONSTITUTION CUP: 08/10/2011

On October 8th Desert Springs hosted the Constitution Cup on the Indiana course. It was a sunny and warm day, and the course was in perfect condition for the players.

A total of 12 players entered the tournament, prizes were given to the top 3 players. Some great scores were registered considering the competition being played on an Individual Medal format.

A very close match was held between Michael Coleman and Marcos Azpiazu, who finished their round with a net 73 shots. Michael Coleman finished first due to his great back nine. Finishing third, Wikkie de Graaf, best lady of the day, shot a net 75.

The overall champion was Mike Thorpe who had a gross score of 83 shots.

The prize giving was held at the deck of El Torrente and hosted by Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Competitions Committee Member Steve Armstrong.

SEPTEMBER GREENSOMES: 24/09/2011

The September Greensomes comprised a total field of 14 pairs competing in the Greensomes format competition held on Saturday 24th September. 
It was a beautiful sunny morning at Desert Springs, with warm temperatures that made scoring a real challenge to everyone.

Duncan Boston and Richard Fuller managed their games to play an impressive round achieving 41 points, allowing them to win the tournament by 3 points, followed by Elizabeth and Rory McCartney in second place, tied at 38 points with Michael Neilan and Stephen Beard.

The Nearest to the Pin contest held on the 14th Hole were won by Dennis Stafford and Pat Clay respectively.

The prize giving was held at the Clubhouse Deck, hosted by Desert Springs Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Committee Member Gerard Ulijn.

SEPTEMBER STABLEFORD: 17/09/11

The September Stableford comprised a total field of 28 entrants competing in the Stableford format competition held on Saturday 17th September. 
Nonetheless, it was a beautiful sunny day at Desert Springs which helped for many good scores.

In Category 2, Hetty Ulijn managed her game to play a very competitive round achieving 42 points, allowing her to lead the category by 4 points, followed by Michael Neilan in second place and Francisco Fernandez in third, with 38 and 35 points respectively. Unofficially Brad Vanstone had a spectacular round with 40 points. Category 1 was once again extremely competitive; Sergio Saavedra needed 40 points to win the tournament, trailed by Brent Clark-Whittle with 39 points and Paul Taylor with 37 points.

The Nearest to the Pin contest on the 8th Hole was won by Roger Butters in the Men section, whilst no Ladies hit the green in this occasion.

The prize giving was held at the Clubhouse Deck, hosted by Desert Spring’s Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf, Vice-Captain Sergio Saavedra, Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

THE FLAG TOURNAMENT: 27/08/11

The newly created Flag Tournament comprised a field of 17 entrants competing in the Medal Play format competition “with a twist” held on Saturday 27th August.

It was a beautiful sunny day at Desert Springs, the course was in perfect condition and an intense breeze kept the challenge up.
Richard Fuller was the overall winner with a net score of 69 shots. One shot behind him, Hetty Ulijn was runner-up with 70 shots. On third position there was a tie between Duncan Boston and Freddie Beames.

Nearest to the Pin contests on Hole 17th were won by Gill Hudson and Duncan Boston respectively.

The prize giving was held at the Clubhouse Deck, hosted by the Club Committee Members Gerard Ulijn and Stephen Armstrong, Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

THE SUMMER CHALLENGE CUP: 06/08/11

A total of 22 golfers participated in the annual Summer Challenge Cup hosted at the Indiana Course at Desert Springs.

Unfortunately, the great conditions of the golf course and the beautiful weather didn´t help players to shoot great scores. The overall winner of the competition was Robert Stillwell, with 35 points. He was also the winner of the 2nd Category, followed by Wikkie de Graaf with 33 points and Hetty Ulijn one shot behind. Of the 1st Category the winner was José Arcos Usero with 32 points, one clear from Diego Cruz-Villalón, Roger Butters, Stephen Armstrong and Richard Fuller.

The Nearest to the Pin contest was won by the Lockyer family, since both Phil and Shone had the best shots of the day on the 8th Hole.

Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Committee Members Gerard Ulijn and Stephen Armstrong hosted the prize presentation at the deck in the Clubhouse.

THE PROFESSIONALS CHALLENGE CUP: 30/07/11

The Professionals Challenge Cup was played on a very warm day at Desert Springs Resort. A turnout of 8 couples signed up intending to “Beat the Pro´s”, which was successfully achieved by most of the participants.

There were some remarkable scores including Stephen Talbot/ William Meeks who finished third with 37 points. Runner-up was the couple formed by David Fry/ Phil Napleton with 39 points, on countback behind the overall winners: Kirby Garrod/ Joe James with a net 39 points.

The prize presentation was held at the Crocodile Club and hosted by the Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf, Competitions Committee Member Stephen Armstrong and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

DESERT SPRINGS MED-FORD: 24/07/11

On the 24th July 2011 Desert Springs hosted the Desert Springs Med-Ford. Traditionally this competition is played under two different formats: Holes 1-9 are  played in a Medal format, and holes 10-18 are played in a Stableford format. The players’ stableford score will then be deducted from their net medal score to give the final score.

On such a warm summer day, there were some great scores battled to win the competition and as usual, the Indiana Course was in outstanding conditions for the event.

There were 2 players tied for 3rd place with 25 points: Bjorn Quitzau and Jacoby Niels; Bjorn finally took the third position on countback. In second place, with 24 points, Wikkie de Graaf. The winner of the competition was Jean Vuylesteke, who played great golf and finished with a total of 21 points: Good job Jean!.

The prize presentation was hosted on the Deck at the Clubhouse by Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn.

DIRECTOR'S TROPHY: 04/06/11

The 2011 Director´s Trophy was played by a final field of 15 players. This event was played on the Indiana Course under an Individual Stableford format, with only one category.

The competition was very close, although nobody could score well on such a warm morning. Judith Whittaker was the eventual winner with 34 points followed by Michael Neilan, who was second with 33 points after countback. Freddie Beames finished third with the same score, allowing him to still earn a prize.

There was a Nearest to the Pin contest on the 14th Hole, which was won by David Aris.

Good weather and superb course conditions helped golfers to enjoy their morning at Desert Springs.

SPRING CUP: 14/05/11

Perfect golfing conditions were present at the Indiana Course during the celebration of the Spring Cup. A total field of 15 players entered the event, knowing that any score above 30 points could well be worth a prize.

Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf was last on the podium scoring 33 points, six less than Alan Waldron who was second and shot a very respectable 75 gross. In this ocassion, Vice Captain Sergio Saavedra took the victory with 41 points, granting himself a big handicap cut and also claiming the overall title.

Leo Kenny won a Nearest to the Pin contest, prize presented together with a raffle held at the Clubhouse Gallery by Captain Wikkie de Graaf, Vice Captain Sergio Saavedra, Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

MAY DAY COMPETITION: 01/05/11

On the 1st of May - 2011 Desert Springs hosted the May Day Competition. A fantastic field of 29 players battled to win the competition in two different categories and as usual, the Indiana Course was in outstanding conditions for the event.

On a great event like this, the scores were quite good and Tony Kelly turned a winning score of 35 points. He also won the 1st Category, followed by Peter Eldridge with 31 points and Alan Patterson at 31. On the 2nd Category the results were very tight and Noel Gilbert finished third with 30 points. Three points ahead Martin McLellan was second on countback, with the same 34 point score turned in by the category winner Gill Hudson. After the presentation there was a raffle as players enjoyed the post tournament atmosphere.

The prize presentation was hosted on the Deck at the Clubhouse by Committee Members Gerard Ulijn and Lynne Taylor, as well as Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

CAPTAIN´S DRIVE-IN: 29/04/11

A final field of 23 teams entered the 2011 Captain´s Drive-In at Desert Springs Resort.

Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf was an excepcional ambassador and turned the tournament into an enjoyable experience for all participants.
A morning coktail was served at the Cave Bar, where players could contribute to charity by buying “Mulligans”. The España (Yellow - Red) theme was present throughout the day with a vast amount of “Flamenco” dresses, yellow and red apparel, and even a horse made an appearance at the Cave Bar!. The actual Drive-In was held afterwards on the 1st Tee, followed by the tournament shotgun start.

As you could expect from competitions played under Texas Scramble format, there were many great scores. The winning team formed by Alan Patterson, James Patterson, Rebekah Patterson and Peter Eldridge returned 53 net shots, which were good to claim the victory. After a magnificent golf round, the team formed by Jenny Beckett, David Beckett, Ashleys Roberts and Gina Roberts finished runner-up on the event with 56 net shots.

Presentation was held at the Crocodile Club after such tremendous golfing day and spanish buffet lunch.

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP & HANDICAP SALVER: 26-27/04/11

Two days of beautiful sunshine welcomed players to one of the most important events of the year. The Club Championship brought together some of the best Club players on this two-day competition held at Desert Springs.

The Indiana Course was in magnificent conditions, with its usual fast greens and magnificent landscaping.

This edition, the Club Championship title has been undecided until the second round. In the Ladies section, Sue Wood took the final lead with a gross 182, twelve shots ahead of Susan Kenny. In the Gents side, Alan Patterson came back steady through the second round to win the championship and defend his title with a gross 160 shots, eight ahead of runner-up Camillas Muldowney.

Results were very different in the Handicap Salver. This net competition takes place on the same days and is entered by the same players as the Club Championship. Alan Patterson was the winner on countback with a net 148 shots; spaniard Sergio Saavedra finished runner-up with 148 shots, despite of leading half-way through the event. On the ladies part Sue Wood won the Handicap Salver with a net score of 140 shots, 17 shots ahead of Gill Hudson.

Prizes were presented by Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Committee Member Paul Taylor after “Honours Dinner”, where the winners received a warm applause from the rest of participants.

EASTER CUP: 24/04/11

The Easter Cup comprised a large field of 60 players, who competed in a Stableford format on the twenty-fourth of April.

The course greeted all players on a cloudy morning, and the conditions of the Indiana course were superb. Despite of the light rain and midday breeze, all participants could play on short sleeves during this mild spring morning.

The competition was split in three categories according to their handicaps: In the Bronze Category, Michael Wherlock won the competition after scoring 34 points. Martin Vanstone finished second only one point behind; Bill O´Herlihy was third after countback, after tying with Martin McLellan and Sergio Saavedra, all with 31 points.

In the Silver Category Daryl Kirby claimed the victory with 37 points, which were enough to also win the overall competition. Leo and Susan Kenny completed the podium in this category after turning 34 and 33 points respectively.
The Gold Category registered 3 players with handicaps below 5, what a field! Diego Cruz achieved 36 points, 2 ahead of Peter Easthope who finished second. Third was Richard Dunphy on countback, after tying with Alan Patterson with 33 points.

INDIANA MASTERS: 09 & 10/04/11

The 2011 Indiana Masters tournament attracted a field of 17 players. This event is a 36-hole Stableford competition, played over 2 days, with the winner being the player with the best 2 day aggregate score.

The competition was very close with many good scores over the 2 days. Wikkie de Graaf with 64 points, a great performance by Wikkie after being out of the course for several months. An impressive second round under difficult conditions with 35 points gave her the victory on countback over Freddie Beames. The third position belonged to Fergus Smyth with 63 points, who could not keep up after reaching 37 points during the first round.

Warm weather and superb course conditions helped the players to enjoy a golfing weekend full of prizes for different contests held.

ST PATRICK'S DAY BOWL: 17/03/2011

On March 17th 2011 Desert Springs hosted the St. Patrick´s Day Bowl. The sunny weather and the great conditions of the Indiana course allowed the players to show their best skills on such exciting day for the Irish competitors.

A total of 10 men and 4 ladies entered this competition, totalling14 players. The winner of the competition was Freddie Beames on countback, with 35 points, followed by Rosario Maria Dudley, with the same score. Michael Wherlock came in 3rd with 34 points, after missing a short putt on the 18th hole that would have meant a triple tie on the lead.

The prize presentation was held at El Torrente Restaurant during the St. Patrick´s Day Bowl dinner, and hosted by Club Vice-Captain Wikkie de Graaf.

DESERT SPRINGS WALTZ 05/03/11

The Desert Springs Waltz comprised a field of 9 players, as 3 teams competed to claim the victory. Scores were calculated by using the ‘Waltz’ system - best single score on Hole 1, best 2 scores on Hole 2, best 3 scores on Hole 3, best single score on Hole 4, best 2 scores on Hole 5 etc.

The course greeted all players on a beautiful morning, and the conditions of the Indiana course were superb. Despite of a continuous morning breeze, most participants played on short sleeves during this mild spring morning. The team formed by Janet Mathewson, David Mathewson and Phil Lockyer won the Waltz with 68 points, 6 ahead of the Spanish team formed by Felipe Martínez, Vicente Blanquet and Fernando Lao, who were runner-up after countback.

The prize giving took place at El Torrente, and was held by Club Captain Philip Lockyer, Vice-Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Competitions Committee Members Gerard Ulijn and Richard Fuller.

ANDALUCIAN DAY TOURNAMENT: 27/02/11

A small field of 8 golfers participated on the annual Andalucía Day Tournament hosted at the Indiana Course at Desert Springs.

The great conditions of the golf course didn´t help players to achieve as good scores as usual. Some heavy wind gusts made the game such a challenge as only one player scored above 30 points. The winner of the competition was Juan Pedro Alonso Salmerón, with 31 points, and followed very closely by Stephen Armstrong with 29 points, after beating Roger Butters on countback.

Wikkie de Graaf, Gerard Ulijn and José Ignacio Olea hosted the prize presentation in the Clubhouse.

DESERT SPRINGS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP: 12 & 13/2/2011

The Desert Springs Open Championship comprised a field of only 10 players, who competed in a 36-Hole Stableford format.

Desert Springs greeted all players on two beautiful mornings; the conditions of the Indiana course, as commented by many competitors, were superb.

The overall winner was Patrick Dunphy after posting 66 Net points. On second place, Hugh Mullins had 63 points over the two days of competition. Dennis Stafford, who had the lowest handicap out of all competitors, completed the podium with 60 points.

Club Committee Member Richard Fuller won the Longest Drive Contest on Hole 10, and Freddie Beames claimed the Nearest to the Pin contest on the 14th Hole.

The prize giving took place at El Torrente, and was held by Club Vice-Captain Wikkie de Graaf, Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

THE EPIPHANY CHALLENGE: 6/1/2011

Bradley's Hugs Fun Tournament is one of the most enjoyable competitions within the Tournament Calendar. All players must wear a costume and there is a funds raise for charity.

The Indiana course was in pristine condition with the weather perfect for good scoring.

The competition was played in a Texas Scramble format with teams of 4 players each, with some great scores being posted.

On countback, with a Net score of 60 shots, the team formed by Gill Hudson, Rick Hudson, Patrick Wood and Sue Wood finished third on this year edition. Thank to their impressive last holes, Trevor Broughton, Paul Gutierrez, David Aris and Patrick Sweeney finished second, but still way behind the leaders. An amazing score of 51 shots was good enough to enable the team formed by Brad Vanstone, Kristopher Gray, Kenneth Lee and James Raynor Charles claim the victory.

All the players commented on how fun the event was and the great atmosphere around it, including several interesting costumes!

DESERT SPRINGS COMMUNITY TROPHY: 02/01/2011

On the 2nd of January - 2011 Desert Springs hosted the Desert Springs Community Trophy. A fantastic field of 37 players battled to win the competition in three different categories and as usual, the Indiana Course was in outstanding conditions for the event.

On a great event like this, the scores were very good. Within the Ladies category, Shona Lockyer turned a winning score of 39 points, followed by Sue Wood with 35 points and Gail McKemmie with 31.On the Men side, Patrick Wood won the 2nd Category with 41 points, followed by Martin McLellan with 35 points and Ben Needham only one point behind. The 1st Category also presented many good scores, and Club Champion Alan Patterson took the victory with 39 points. One point behind him, Frank Young was the Runner-Up and Philip Lockyer finished third with 36 points.

With regard to the contests Gail McKemmie won both Nearest to the Pin and Longest Drive on the ladies section. Patrick Wood was the most accurate player on the Nearest to the Pin men section and Martin McLellan won the Longest Drive.

The Community Trophy was won by Desert Drive with 152 points, 21 points ahead of Buenavista.

The prize presentation was hosted at the Clubhouse by Club Captain Phil Lockyer and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.
