Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter June 2016

Dear Member / Property Owner,
Following on from the Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter sent to you in April, which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana Course in May, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in June 2016.

MAY COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Hollow Coring Greens
The hollow coring of the golf course and practice greens has been completed as per the golf course maintenance schedule.

Green’s Collar Turfing
The program of replacing contaminated turf on the green’s collars has been completed.

Poa annua Control
The scheduled program of controlling and eliminating Poa annua grass in the putting greens will continue throughout the year.

JUNE COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

1st Hole Irrigation Cable Repair
A new communication cable will be installed from the green side irrigation satellite controller to the main junction box located in the desert hard pan 60m away. This will resolve a maintenance issue in which the 1st tees are not being watered correctly. The work will take approximately 2 days to complete. Disruption to the cart track and play will be keep to an absolute minimum.

Hydro Jet Greens
The greens will be aerified with the “Hydrojet” machine. This system of aeration creates small pin sized air holes in the green by the use of high-pressure water, improving water and air movement throughout the soil profile. There will be no adverse effect to the quality of the green playing surface during this time.

Fresh Water Irrigation
To reduce the impact of salty irrigation water and salt accumulation on the putting surfaces, the golf greens will be hand watered with fresh water irrigation. The large volume of water used will help flush soluble salts beyond the root zone and increase soil aeration. Hand watering will take place early in the early morning and disruption to play will be kept to an absolute minimum.

Hand Watering Greens and Tees
Throughout the summer months hand watering of the greens and tees will take place. Please be advised that this is an essential part of summer maintenance to improve soil moisture consistency and reduces water use. Hand watering cannot be stopped during play for this reason.
