Tournament Reports 2012

 

DESERT CLASSIC: 13 & 14/10/2012

The 2012 Desert Classic tournament attracted a field of 18 players. This event is a 36 hole Stableford competition, played over 2 days, with the winner being the player who accumulates the best 2 day aggregate score.

The competition was very close with many good scores over the 2 days. Sue Wood was the eventual winner with 80 points, a great performance by Sue who scored 45 points on the first day of competition. Four points behind Alan Patterson and Ian Thornton were Runner-Up with an aggregate 76 points, far ahead of the rest of competitors.

Good weather and superb course conditions helped the players to achieve some good scores.

The prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse, hosted by Desert Springs Club Committee.

THE CONSTITUTION CUP: 08/10/2012

On October 8th Desert Springs hosted the Constitution Cup on the Indiana course. It was a sunny and warm day, and the course was in perfect condition for the players.

A total of 25 players entered the tournament, prizes were given to the top 2 players of each category. Some great scores were registered considering the competition being played on an Individual Medal format.

In the second category, Michael Neilan achieved 75 shots, still four behind the winner, Marcos Azpiazu who managed to another handicap cut. In first category, Alan Waldron was runner-up with a final score of 70 shots, trailing by two the winner Susan Kenny. Both Alan and Susan were the respective Men and Ladies Constitution Cup champions.

The prize giving was held at the deck of El Torrente and hosted by Club Captain Sergio Saavedra and Competitions Committee Members Gerard Ulijn and Michael Wherlock.

SEPTEMBER GREENSOMES: 22/09/2012

The September Greensomes comprised a total field of 10 pairs competing in the Greensomes format competition held on Saturday 22nd September.

It was a beautiful sunny morning at Desert Springs, with warm temperatures that made scoring a real challenge to everyone.

Phil Webster and Alan Patterson managed their games to play an impressive round achieving 39 points, allowing them to win the tournament on countback. Sergio Saavedra and David Barrows were second, 3 points ahead of the couple Freddie Beames and Past Captain Wikkie de Graaf.

The prize giving was held at the Clubhouse Deck, hosted by Desert Springs Club Captain Sergio Saavedra, Past Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

SEPTEMBER STABLEFORD: 15/09/2012

The September Stableford comprised a total field of 33 entrants competing in the Stableford format competition held on Saturday 15th September.

Nonetheless, it was a beautiful sunny day at Desert Springs which helped for many good scores.

In Category 2, Wilson Riera managed her game to play a very competitive round achieving 41 points, allowing him to lead the category by 5 points, followed by Nicola Watson in second place and Gail McKemmie in third, with 36 and 34 points respectively.

Category 1 was once again extremely competitive; José Angel Muñoz needed 42 points to win the tournament, trailed by Gerardo Torres one point behind and Javier Abellán with 36 points.

THE FLAG TOURNAMENT: 25/08/2012

The second edition of the Flag Tournament comprised a field of 22 entrants competing in the Medal Play format competition “with a twist” held on Saturday 25th August.

It was a beautiful sunny day at Desert Springs, the course was in perfect condition and an intense heat kept the challenge up.

Duncan Boston was the overall winner with a net score of 71 shots. One shot behind him on the 1st Category, Ignacio Domingo was runner-up with 72 shots. On the 2nd Category the winner was Esteban Riquelme on countback over Raimundo Herraiz, both with 73 shots.

Nearest to the Pin contest on Hole 14th was won by Esteban Riquelme.

The prize giving was held at the Clubhouse Deck, hosted by the Club Committee Member Gerard Ulijn, and Club Past Captain Wikkie de Graaf.

THE SUMMER CHALLENGE CUP: 04/08/2012

A total of 18 golfers participated in the annual Summer Challenge Cup hosted at the Indiana Course at Desert Springs.

Fortunately, the great conditions of the golf course and the beautiful weather helped players to shoot great scores. The overall winner of the competition was Stephen Armstrong, with 38 points after achieving 24 of them in the front nine. He was followed by the Junior Liam Dunphy, who was second after countback with 37 points, same score as José Arcos Usero.

The Nearest to the Pin contests were won by the Halfpenny family, since both Robert and Phil had the best shots of the day on the 2nd and 14th Holes respectively.

Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea hosted the prize presentation in El Torrente Restaurant at the Clubhouse.

THE PROFESSIONALS CHALLENGE CUP: 28/07/2012

The Professionals Challenge Cup was played on a very warm day at Desert Springs Resort. A turnout of 16 couples signed up intending to “Beat the Pro”, which was successfully achieved by most of the participants.

There were many remarkable scores and handicap cuts, including Roger Butters/Duncan Boston who finished third with 45 points. Runner-up was the couple formed by Manuel Ruiz / Santos Fernández, on countback behind the overall winners: Fco. Javier García / José Angel Muñoz with a net 46 points.

The prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse Deck and hosted by the Club Vice-Captain Richard Dunphy, Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

DESERT SPRINGS MED-FORD: 22/07/2012

On July 22 2012, Desert Springs hosted the Desert Springs Med-Ford. Traditionally this competition is played under two different formats: Holes 1-9 are played in a Medal format, and holes 10-18 are played in a Stableford format. The players’ Stableford score will then be deducted from their net medal score to give the final score.

On such a warm summer day, there were some fine scores battling to win the competition and as usual, the Indiana Course was in outstanding conditions for the event.

The spanish player José Arcos Usero finished on 3rd place, not far behind José Angel Muñoz who was runner-up. The overall win was for Gustavo Penno who is having a magnificent season and had 38 Stableford points, hence receiving another handicap cut. Good job Gustavo!.

The prize presentation was hosted on the Deck at the Clubhouse by Club Vice-Captain Richard Dunphy and Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn.

DIRECTORS TROPHY: 02/06/2012

The 2012 Directors Trophy was played by a final field of 26 players. This event was played on the Indiana Course under an Individual Stableford format, with two categories due to the field size.

The competition was very close and several players achieved high scores on such a warm morning. José Angel Muñoz was the overall winner and he also claimed the victory on 1st Category, with 39 points followed by Ian Thornton, who was second with 36 points. Margaret Allison finished third with 33 points, allowing her to still earn a prize.

On the 2nd Category, Gustavo Penno was first with 39 points followed by Phil Stratten, who was second with 37 points. Francisco Fernández finished third with 36 points, only one behind the runner-up.

There was a Nearest to the Pin contest on the 14th Hole, which was won by Liz McCartney and Marcos Azpiazu respectively.

Good weather and superb course conditions helped golfers to enjoy their morning at Desert Springs.

OPEN PAIRS TOURNAMENT: 20/05/2012

On May 20th Desert Springs hosted the Open Pairs Competition on the Indiana course. It was a sunny and warm day, and the course was in perfect condition for the players.

A total of only 5 teams entered the tournament, and prizes were given to the Top 2 teams.

The Results were quite high; on second place, Francisco Navarro and Mª Angeles Moya had 33 points, still five points behind John Fry and David Hadden, who claimed the victory with 38 points.

Ian Thornton won the Nearest to the Pin contest on Hole 12th – Chiquita.

The presentation was held at El Torrente and hosted by Club Captain Sergio Saavedra and Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn.

THE SPRING CUP: 19/05/2012

Perfect golfing conditions were present at the Indiana Course during the celebration of the Spring Cup. A total field of 18 players entered the event, knowing that any score above 30 points could well be worth a prize.

Club Captain Sergio Saavedra was last on the podium scoring 36 points, only one behind Gustavo Penno with 37 points. In this occasion, Roger Butters shot 74 and took the victory with 40 points, granting himself a big handicap cut and also claiming the overall title.

Ashley Roberts won the Longest Drive contest, and the prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse Gallery by Captain Sergio Saavedra, Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

MAY DAY STABLEFORD: 01/05/2012

On the 1st of May - 2012 Desert Springs hosted the May Day Competition. A fantastic field of 25 players battled to win the competition in two different categories and as usual, the Indiana Course was in outstanding conditions for the event.

On a great event like this, the scores were quite good and Alan Patterson turned a winning score of 42 points on the 1st Category, followed by Sergio Saavedra with 37 points. On the 2nd Category the results were great as well and Jim Kelly finished second with 35 points. Seven points ahead Gustavo Penno was the category winner.

José Luis Ramón won the Nearest to the Pin contest on Hole 8 “Head Dunk”.

The prize presentation was hosted on the Deck at the Clubhouse by Committee Member Gerard Ulijn, as well as Club Captain Sergio Saavedra.

INDIANA MASTERS: 21 & 22/04/2012

The 2012 Indiana Masters tournament attracted a low field of only 6 players. This event is a 36-hole Stableford competition, played over 2 days, with the winner being the player with the best 2 day aggregate score.

The competition was very close with over the 2 days. Club Vice-Captain Richard Dunphy claimed the victory with 62 points, a great performance by Richard gave him the victory on countback over Alberto Quevedo. The third position belonged to Sergio Saavedra with 61 points.

Warm weather and superb course conditions helped the players to enjoy a golfing weekend full of prizes for different contests held.

The prize presentation was held at the El Torrente Restaurant, hosted by Desert Springs Club Captain Sergio Saavedra and Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn.

CAPTAIN'S DRIVE-IN: 13/04/2012

A final field of 67 players entered the 2012 Captain´s Drive-In at Desert Springs Resort.

Club Captain Sergio Saavedra was an exceptional ambassador and turned the tournament into an enjoyable experience for all participants.

A morning cocktail was served at the Cave Bar, where players could contribute to charity by buying “Mulligans”. The 2012 London Olympics theme was present throughout the day with a vast amount of “Athletes” golfing on the Indiana Course!. The actual Drive-In was held afterwards on the 1st Tee, followed by the tournament shotgun start.

As you could expect from competitions played under Texas Scramble format, there were many great scores. The winning team formed by Shona Lockyer, Phil Lockyer, Pat Clay and David Garnett returned 58 net shots, which were good to claim the victory. After a magnificent golf round, the team formed by Margaret Allison, Rory McCartney, Elizabeth McCartney and Alan Patterson finished runner-up on countback with 59 net shots.

The Beatles Party and Prize Presentation was held at the Crocodile Club after such tremendous golfing day and buffet lunch.

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP & HANDICAP SALVER: 10 & 11/04/2012

Two days of beautiful sunshine and windy conditions welcomed players to one of the most important events of the year. The Club Championship brought together some of the best Club players on this two-day competition held at Desert Springs.

The Indiana Course was in magnificent conditions, with its usual fast greens and magnificent landscaping.

This edition, the Club Championship title has been undecided until the second round. In the Ladies section, Susan Kenny with a gross 185, eleven shots ahead of Sue Wood. In the Gents side, Rory McCartney came back steady through the second round to win the championship with a gross 164 shots, only 2 shots ahead of Camillus Muldowney.

Results were very different in the Handicap Salver. This net competition takes place on the same days and is entered by the same players as the Club Championship. Patrick Sweeney was the winner with a net 149 shots; Freddie Beames was runner-up on countback with 150 shots. On the ladies part Lynne Taylor won the Handicap Salver with a net score of 155 shots, on countback vs. Susan Kenny.

Prizes were presented by Captain Sergio Saavedra, Past Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Committee Members Lynne Taylor and Gerard Ulijn after “Honours Dinner”, where the winners received a warm applause from the rest of participants.

EASTER CUP: 08/04/12

The Easter Cup comprised a large field of 42 players, who competed in a Stableford format on the eighth of April.

The course greeted all players on a cloudy morning, and the conditions of the Indiana course were superb. Despite of the light breeze, all participants could play on short sleeves during this mild spring morning.

The competition was split in two categories according to the players handicaps: In the Silver Category, Ryan Stillwell won the competition after scoring 39 points. Nicky Vanstone finished second three points behind; Fergus Smyth was third with 34 points.

The Gold Category registered some amazing results, what a day! Richard Dunphy achieved 41 points to also claim the overall victory, 4 ahead of Rory McCartney who finished second. Third was Steven Gray with 33 points.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY BOWL: 17/03/2012

On March 17th 2012 Desert Springs hosted the St. Patrick's Day Bowl. The sunny weather and the great conditions of the Indiana course allowed the players to show their best skills on such exciting day for the Irish competitors.

A total of 23 players entered this competition. On the 1st Category, the winner was Kirby Garrod with 31 points, followed by Michael Coleman with 30 points. On the 2nd Category, the winner was Francisco Fernández with 41 points, and also overall winner. Runner-Up was Oscar Granado with 35 points. Great Scores!

Francisco Fernández and Laurence Meldrum claimed the Nearest to the Pin contests on Holes 2 & 17 respectively.

The prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse Deck, and hosted by Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn.

THE IRISH INTERNATIONAL: 16/03/2012

Desert Springs has recently hosted The Irish International, one of the club’s annual trophies. 18 competitors entered the event which was an individual stableford competition. Following the tradition, Ireland played against the Rest of the World team, hoping for a first-time win.

The sunny weather and the outstanding conditions of the Indiana course helped all the players to ensure a great morning and post competitive results. Nicola Iles and Bill Iles received a special prize since they came 1st and 2nd respectively, adding a total of 75 points!

In the team competition, Rest of the World successfully defended the title against the uninspired Irish team. There was a big difference of over 40 points. So the Irish team will need to visit the Golf Academy facilities more often.

Nearest to the Pin contests were won by Julien Deraedt and Paul Taylor respectively.

ANDALUCIA DAY TOURNAMENT: 28//02/2012

A small field of 8 golfers participated on the annual Andalucía Day Tournament hosted at the Indiana Course at Desert Springs. The great conditions of the golf course didn't help players to achieve as good scores as usual. The fast greens made the game such a challenge as nobody achieved a handicap decrease. The winner of the competition was José Arcos Usero, with 34 points, and followed on countback by Stephen Armstrong.

Hugh Mullins was the winner of the Nearest to the Pin contest, held on Hole 14 – Tiburón.

Wikkie de Graaf and Stephen Armstrong hosted the prize presentation in the Clubhouse.

THE CARNIVAL SCRAMBLE: 18//02/2012

A final field of 7 teams entered the 2012 Carnival Scrambe on its very first edition, at Desert Springs Resort.

Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf was an excepcional ambassador and turned the tournament into an enjoyable experience for all participants.

As you could expect from competitions played under Texas Scramble format, there were many great scores. The winning team formed by Juan de Dios Sánchez, Sergio Saavedra, Gill Hudson and Paul Adams returned 50 points, which were good to claim the victory on countback.The team formed by Rose Dudley, John Dudley, Kay Dunphy and Pat Dunphy finished second, 3 points ahead of Trish Johnson, Martin Park, Craig Stewart and Scott.

Dot Harris and Alan Humphries won the Nearest to the Pin contests respectively.

The Prize Presentation was held at the Clubhouse after such tremendous golfing day and before the buffet dinner.

DESERT SPRINGS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP: 11 & 12//02/2012

The Desert Springs Open Championship comprised a field of only 13 players, who competed in a 36-Hole Stableford format.

Desert Springs greeted all players on two sunny but windy mornings; the conditions of the Indiana course, as commented by many competitors, were superb.

The overall winner was Freddie Beames after posting 70 Net points. On second place, Hugh Mullins had 69 points over the two days of competition including a great score of 40 points on the 1st Round. Patrick Dunphy completed the podium with 67 points.

Sue Wood and Freddie Beames claimed the respective Longest Drive Contests and Hugh Mullins won the Nearest to the Pin Contest.

The prize giving took place at El Torrente, and was held by Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Competitions Committee Member Gerard Ulijn.

THE EPIPHANY CHALLENGE: 05/01/2012

On January 5th, Desert Springs hosted the Epiphany Challenge during a warm winter morning. With temperatures in the low 20´s, a total field of 28 players thoroughly enjoyed the great conditions on the Indiana course.

There were two separate categories; on the 2nd Category, Michael Wherlock was third on countback with 33 points, one behind Martin McLellan who was runner-up. The winner was Santos Fernández García with 35 points.

Within the 1st Category Ashley Roberts finished third, scoring 34 points. Paul Taylor was second after turning 37 points. Unfortunately this wasn´t enough to catch Connor McCauley, who also claimed the overall victory with 39 points.

Prizes were presented at the Deck by Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf, Competitions Committee Members Gerard Ulijn and Stephen Armstrong and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

DESERT SPRINGS COMMUNITY TROPHY: 02/01/2012

On the 2nd of January - 2012 Desert Springs hosted the Desert Springs Community Trophy. A field of 15 players battled to win the competition and as usual, the Indiana Course was in outstanding conditions for the event.

Unlikely, the scores were not too high in this occasion. The Community Trophy was won by Las Sierras and La Fuente, and the team members were Gill Hudson, Rick Hudson, Rob Davies, Donna Davies and James Raynor Charles. On a different note, James also had the best score of the day with 35 points.

The prize presentation was hosted at the Clubhouse by Club Captain Wikkie de Graaf.
