NEW YEAR'S EVE MIXED PAIRS STABLEFORD : 31/12/15

The New Years Eve Mixed Pairs was held on a simply delicious final day of 2015. This year’s event had a total of 17 pairs participating on the Indiana Course at Desert Springs, which was presented in excellent condition.

Things couldn´t have been any tighter at the top of the leaderboard with four couples all scoring 39 stableford points. The winners (Low Handicap) for the final competition of the year were husband and wife team, Barry and Jaki White, from Paul and Lynne Taylor, Martin and Nicky Vanstone, and Jim and Linda Kendall.

The prize giving ceremony took place on the deck and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

CHRISTMAS INDIVIDUAL STABLEFORD : 26/12/15

A total of 23 players competed for The Christmas Individual Stableford played on Boxing Day. The beautiful Indiana Course was bathed in sunshine which was enjoyed by all.

Philip Lockyer took out the festive victory with a score of 36 points (Low Handicap), from John Haydon. The prize giving ceremony took place in the Clubhouse and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

GOLF 4 WOMEN WINTER GOLF FESTIVAL : 21/11/15 – 28/11/15

All eyes were on The Indiana Course for a week of golf, and fun, for 24 Ladies who entered The Golf 4 Women Festival for 2015. A fantastic week was had by all, with new friendships made, and lots of great memories to take away.

Six Teams of 4 played five tournament rounds over 7 days, with all the daily team scores counting towards an overall total for the week.

An extremely closely fought contest took place with positions changing constantly, but eventually there had to be winners with The Fore Tops, comprising of team captain Patricia Deraedt, Catherine Thaels, Virginie Van Haelen, and Marianne Rodaer, being crowned Champions for 2015, followed by The Slice Girls II, Susan Kenny (Captain), Kay Dunphy, Hilary O´Herlihy, and Maida McGowan, in second place. The Sierra Birdies, Jaki White (Captain), Amanda Mayne, Carol Cass, and Pat Bennet, took third place. A prizegiving dinner was held on the final evening in El Torrente Restaurant to celebrate a wonderful week at Desert Springs.

THE PRESIDENT'S CUP : 07/11/15

The Presidents Cup brought to an end a very busy period of tournament golf at Desert Springs. Another great field of 30 players entered the event held on the beautiful Indiana Course under powder blue skies.

Barbara Wardley proved a very popular winner and was crowned champion with a score of 38 points. Zoe Griffiths took the runners-up position with 32 points, followed by Robert Banton with 31 points.

The prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

THE HANDICAP SALVER : 31/10/15 – 01/11/15

The Club Handicap Salver was held over two days on the last weekend of October. 35 players entered the event held on the beautiful Indiana Course and played under stableford scoring conditions.

Frank Young was victorious in the Men´s event with a combined score of 71 points, narrowly beating Patrick Sweeney with 70 points. For the Ladies, Elaine Gray was crowned champion with a score of 60 points, from Susan Kenny with 59 points.

The prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

PAST CAPTAIN'S TEAM CHALLENGE : 25/10/15

A fantastic field of 33 players teed it up for The Past Captain´s Team Challenge the morning after the festivities of The Captain´s Charity Day celebrations the night before. A stunning morning greeted the players for the event held on the beautiful Indiana Course.

´Team Mathewson` comprising of past captain David Mathewson, current captain Richard Fuller, Dennis Stafford, Barry White, Ken Taylor, and Patrick Sweeney, took home the honours for the day.

The prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

CAPTAIN'S CHARITY DAY : 24/10/15

Club Captain for 2015 Richard Fuller hosted his Charity Day on a gorgeous day in late October. The stage was set for 24 Teams of four to compete in a Texas Scramble on the beautiful Indiana Course.

The team of Ray Charles, Dennis Stafford, Phil Webster, and Frank Young were crowned Charity Day Champions, followed by husband and wife teams Steve and Elaine Gray playing with Paul and Lynne Taylor in second place, and Leo and Susan Kenny playing with Pat and Kay Dunphy in third.

The prize presentation was held as celebrations went long into the night at The Crocodile Club and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

THE AUTUMN TROPHY : 17/10/15

The Indiana Course at Desert Springs hosted The Autumn Trophy competition with perfect playing conditions and beautiful weather. A fantastic field of 46 players took part in this Individual Stableford competition and had to showcase their very best skills to try and top the leaderboard. 
Neil Halliday managed to rise above the rest with a great score of 38 points, followed by Alan Hewitt with 37 points. Phil Webster and Phil Angus shared third position with 36 points.

THE DESERT CLASSIC : 10/10/15 – 11/10/15

The Desert Classic Tournament was held over a picture postcard weekend in October. This year’s event had a total of 29 players participating on the Indiana Course at Desert Springs, which was presented in excellent condition.
Phil Miles won the event with a combined total score of 76 points over the two days, second place went to Mark Newall with 69 points, with third place going to Phil Angus.

THE CONSTITUTION CUP : 06/10/15

A total of 34 players competed for The Constitution Cup on the beautiful Indiana Course with glorious weather conditions which were enjoyed by all.
It was a very close contest among all players. Alan Patterson was victorious with a round of 78 (Low Handicap), from Mike Thorpe. The prize giving ceremony took place on the deck and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

SEPTEMBER GREENSOMES : 19/09/2015

Desert Springs welcomed the 17 pairs who gathered to compete on the annual September Greensomes on the always challenging Indiana Course.

Despite the difficulty of the format, in which after selecting the best tee shot, players would hit alternate shots until finishing the hole; some great scoring was seen.

Philip Angus and Stuart Baynham mastered the format achieving a total of 41 points and the victory. They were closely followed by the team formed by Club Captain Richard Fuller and Ray Charles, with 40.

The prize presentation took place on the deck at the Clubhouse and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

SEPTEMBER STABLEFORD : 05/09/2015

A total of 34 competitors took part in the September Stableford at the always challenging Indiana Course, which proved to be a great test of golf once again.
Barry White took advantage of the course knowledge to post a great score of 40 points, which was followed by an army of players with 36 points. A great mix of Members (men and ladies) and visitors, who came from both overseas and local area.
The price presentation was held at the The Deck and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

THE FLAG : 22/08/2015

One more year, Desert Springs was host of The Flag tournament. This is a particular event, where competitors play a medal play round until they reach their score allocation taking into account the players handicaps. After the competitors hit their last shot, they will place a flag where the ball lies.

A total of 28 golfers went out on the magnificent Indiana Course hoping to place their flag as far as possible, and we even got some players who had to play extra holes to reach their allocated shots!

A total of 5 players ended their round with a net score of 70, which meant that they had to go to the first hole to drive to decide the final position in the scoreboard. However, it was Stuart Baynham who outplayed the field by finishing his round with net 66 strokes, and having to play 5 shots to complete his round!

Club Captain Richard hosted the Prize Presentation and presented the winners with their well deserved prize!

SUMMER CHALLENGE CUP : 01/08/2015

The Indiana Course hosted the annual Summer Challenge Cup, which gathered a total of 26 players competing on this 18 hole Stableford Competition.

Despite the challenge that the Indiana Course at Desert Springs offers, the beautiful weather and the superb course conditions allowed for some great scores.

John Haydon scored 39 points, which gave him a 5 point advantage over Jim Halpenny and José Placer Acero.

The prize presentation took place on The Deck, just outside the Clubhouse and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

THE PROFESSIONALS CHALLENGE CUP : 25/07/2015

One more year the Indiana Course hosted the annual Professionals Challenge Cup. On this pairs event, Desert Springs Golf Professional and the Club Captain team up against a field of member’s and guests pairs, who compete on a Fourball Better Ball format. 

Throughout the years, The Golf Professionals only won this event in one occasion, in 2006, when Golf Professionals Simon Coaker and Colin White managed to beat the rest of the teams.

This year, a total of 18 pairs enjoyed the superb conditions of the Indiana Course at Desert Springs on a beautiful summer day and played some great golf, which was proved by the low scoring, leading to a very tight leaderboard.

A total of three teams tied in fourth place with 41 points, which followed the teams formed by Phil and Ann Miles, and John Haydon and Neil Halliday, who managed to score 42 points in the leaderboard, putting a lot of pressure on the team formed by Club Captain Richard Fuller and Golf Professional Alfonso Castiñeira. Having shot 23 points on the front nine, they needed at least 20 points to claim the trophy. As it happens in great events, Club Captain Richard Fuller sank a 3 footer on the 18th hole to reach 20 points and win the competition outright.

The prize presentation took place at El Torrente Restaurant in the Clubhouse and was hosted by Competitions Committee Member Wikkie de Graaf, who presented the trophy to the winning team, as well as the prizes for nearest to the pin contest, won by Ann Miles and Harry McKinness, who shot very closed approaches on the 8th hole.

 

DESERT SPRINGS MED-FORD : 13/06/15

The Desert Springs Med-Ford is a unique competition of two different formats in one round of golf. The front 9 holes are played as Medal play with the back 9 played as a stableford. 27 players entered the event held on the beautiful Indiana Course.

Stuart Baynham was crowned champion, followed by Phil Miles, who couldn´t quite complete a hat-trick of victories in this event, and then Harry McKinnes and Georgina Roberts.

The prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

 

DIRECTORS TROPHY : 06/06/2015

The Indiana Course at Desert Springs hosted another fantastic competition with perfect playing conditions and beautiful weather. 31 players took part in this Individual Stableford competition and had to showcase their very best skills to try and top the leaderboard. 
John Wardley managed to rise above the rest with a score of wonderful score of 39 points, followed by Ann Miles with 35 points, and Phil Miles with 34 points.

OPEN PAIRS TOURNAMENT : 17/05/2015

The Open Pairs Tournament was held on a picture postcard day in May. This year’s event had a total of 14 pairs participating on the Indiana Course at Desert Springs, which was presented in excellent condition.
The partnership of husband and wife, Phil and Ann Miles, won the event with a better ball score of 44 points, second place went to John Haydon and Lee Coxon with 43 points, with third place going to another husband and wife partnership in Richard and Jackie Fuller.

MAY STABLEFORD : 09/05/2015

A total of 32 players competed on the beautiful Indiana Course with glorious weather conditions which were enjoyed by all.
It was a very close battle among all contestants. Mark Newall was victorious with a score of 38 points (Low Handicap), followed by Carol Hardy, also with 38 points, Adrienne Ruiz and Philip Angus shared the place position with 37 points. The prize giving ceremony took place on the deck and was hosted by Club Captain Richard Fuller.

THE INDIANA MASTERS : 11 & 12/04/2015

After the successful Captain’s Drive In held on the 10th April, our annual Indiana Masters , which coincides with the US Masters at Augusta, gathered an impressive field of 50 players, wanting to put their name on the Honours Board after competing on this 36 hole Stableford Competition.

Club Champion José Ángel Muñoz , still in great shape after his win just two days earlier, scored a total of 70 points, winning the trophy and adding his name to the list of winners on the Board. Paul Taylor came in second position with 66 points.

On the visitors category, Camillus Muldowney took the win with 74 points, followed by Fred Tindale, with 69.

The prize presentation was held in El Torrente hosted by New Club Captain Richard Fuller.

THE CAPTAIN'S DRIVE-IN 10/04/2015

The 2015 Captain's Drive In took place on the 10th April, gathering 23 teams of 4 players, who competed on a Texas Scramble Competition with perfect weather conditions. The theme for this year was the Wild West, and contestants dressed up accordingly!

The day began with a drinks reception at the unique Cave Bar, where 'mulligans' were sold and flags were offered to players who wanted to guess where the first drive of New Captain Richard Fuller would land. All the money collected would be sent to the Captain's Charity, AMCAL.
After the competition, over 100 players and guests gathered at the 'Crocodile Club' Restaurant for a buffet dinner and prize presentation. The winning team, formed by Gail McKemmie, Nicola Watson, Paul and Lynne Taylor, managed to score 52 net shots, and was closely followed by Barry and Jaki White, Nicky and Martin Vansonte, who scored 53 net points. In third place, the team formed by Wikkie de Graaf, Freddie Beames, Ray Charles and Dennis Stafford, who got 56 net points, tied with a number of teams.

All in all, it was a fantastic day and a great welcome to Desert Springs Club Captain, Richard Fuller, who managed to raise over 3,000€ for the charity!

 

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP STABLEFORD : 08/04/2015

Alongside the second round of the Club Championship, the Club Championship Stableford gathered a total of 47 players, competing in an 18 hole stableford tournament.

The winner of this event was Nicky Vanstone with a total of 36 points, followed by Michael Nielan with 34 and Robert Stillwell with 33.

The prize presentation took place during the Club Championship Dinner, hosted by former and new Captain’s David Mathewson and Richard Fuller.

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP : 07 & 08/04/2015

After Easter, the most important Club Competition took place over a 2 round medal play event. The Club Championship crowns the Men’s and Ladies’ Champions, who must battle against the best players and produce the best gross score on the Challenging Indiana Course, played from the Championship Tees. Fast greens and demanding pin positions awaited those who desired to become Club Champion!

After round one, José Ángel Muñoz took the early lead in the Men’s Championship with 81 strokes, followed by Alan Hewitt and John Crosby with 88. On the Ladies side, Gail McKemmie posted an 84 to be the overnight leader, followed by Jaki White with 96.

On round two, chasers tried to close the gap with José Ángel and Gail. However, their lead was solid and they followed up their rounds with 84 and 90 strokes respectively to win by 9 and 12.

Following on from the tournament, the Club Championship Dinner and the Prize Presentation, hosted by former and new Captain’s David Mathewson and Richard Fuller was held in El Torrente.

THE EASTER CUP : 05/04/2015

Desert Springs has always been very active during the Easter holidays, organising events for the family, and the Easter Cup is a great example of an event with great participation. A total of 83 players competed in this year’s Easter Cup, which broke the record of participation for any Desert Springs Individual Competition. The superb conditions of the Indiana Course and the perfect weather allowed for some impressive scoring.

Young Harry McKinness arose from the rest of the field with a sensational 43 points, followed by Adrienne Ruiz and Christine Young with 42 and 41 points respectively.

The prize presentation was held on the beach and hosted by Phil Miles.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY BOWL : 16/03/2015

St. Patrick’s Day Bowl is one of the oldest competitions at Desert Springs, and has always received a great support. This year was no different, having 45 players entering this fun competition held on the beautiful Indiana Course.

Adrienne Ruiz managed to play a great round achieving 37 points to be crowned champion, followed by Kenneth Taylor-Grant with 36 points and Elaine Gray, also with 36 points.

The prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse and was hosted by Club Vice Captain Richard Fuller.

MEMORIAL DAY : 14/03/2015

The Indiana Course at Desert Springs hosted another great competition with perfect playing conditions and beautiful weather. 45 players took part in this Individual Stableford competition and had to show their best skills to climb up the leaderboard.

John Wardley managed to shine above the rest with a score of 36 points, followed by Mark Newall with 35 points, and Philip Angus with 34 points.

DESERT SPRINGS WALTZ : 01/03/2015

The Desert Springs Waltz is a special team event in which participating teams take the best, best two and best three scores depending on the hole that is being played. This year’s event had a total of 6 teams participating on the Indiana Course at Desert Springs, which was in excellent condition.

The team formed by Wikkie De Graaf, Freddie Beames, Ray Charles, and David Needham, managed to amass a total of 87 points, which allowed them to lead the field and win the event, followed by Dennis Stafford, Laurence Meldrum, Patrick Sweeney, and Juan De Dios Sanchez Garcia, with 85 points.

ANDALUCÍA DAY : 28/02/2015

A total of 34 players competed on the fantastic Indiana Course under fantastic weather conditions which were enjoyed by all.

It was a tight battle among all contestants. However, Michael Wherlock managed to score 35 points to secure the victory, followed by Freddie Beames, with 34 points and Barry White, also with 34 points. The prize giving ceremony took place on the deck and was hosted by Phil Miles.

DESERT SPRINGS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP : 14-15/02/2015

23 competitors entered the 2015 Desert Springs Open Championship, which was played over 36 holes on the 14th and 15th February under warm conditions.

The Indiana Course proved to be a great test of golf and players had to show their best skills to post a good score.

After round 1, Phil Miles managed his way around the course achieving an impressive score of 37 points, 3 ahead of Michael Donarski and 6 ahead of a group formed by Alan Hewitt, Patrick Sweeney and Barry White.

In round 2, the chasing pack tried hard to catch the overnight leader, while Freddie Beames, who had scored 28 points on the previous round, displayed a great game to reach 37 points in his second round for a total of 65 points. However, overnight leader Phil Miles kept his game under control to sign a card with 35 points for his second round, and a total of 72 points, to be crowned as the 2015 Desert Springs Open Championship.

THE EPIPHANY CHALLENGE : 06/01/2015

A total field of 49 players participated in the Epiphany Challenge, held on the 6th January 2015, day of the Three Kings.

The competitors enjoyed the beautiful weather and superb conditions of the Indiana Golf Course, and took advantage to shoot some very fine scores.

It was a tight battle between Mike Wherlock and Mike Thorpe, only resolved on the last hole, crowning Mike Thorpe as this year’s Champion with 40 points, while Mike Wherlock fell just short with 39 points. Alan Hewitt and John Haydon came in tied for third place with 37 points.

THE COMMUNITY TROPHY : 29/12/2014

The Community Trophy is an appreciated tournament at Desert Springs where the different communities at the Resort do battle in a stableford tournament to try and claim team honours as the best Community in Golf.

A true team effort with 5 out of the top 8 individual scores for the day coming from the champion combined Communities of Echo Rock, La Fuente, and Las Sierras ensured they were crowned winners for 2015.
