Captain’s Drive-In

Today, the Indiana Course at the Desert Springs Golf Club played host to the Captain’s Drive-In, a tournament where, traditionally, new Club Captains are ceremoniously welcomed to their new role. This year saw Helen Lavis reinvent the Captain’s Drive-In as a ‘Fiesta In Pink’! Helen arrived at the 1st Tee sporting a full length Pink Panther outfit, driving a pink golf buggy, accompanied by Simon Coaker and Christine Langford, in matching outfits to take her first official drive as newly elected Club Captain in front of 90 competitors!

The pink buggy was officially presented to Helen by David Fernandez of Hiper Golf and Garden who has very generously donated the buggy for Helen’s year of captaincy. Helen has chosen to continue supporting the Asociación de Minusvalidos de Cuevas del Almanzora (A.M.C.A.L.) during her year as Captain, but will also be raising funds for the Asociación Española Contra El Cáncer (A.E.C.C.), a charity very close to her heart following her recent battle with cancer. The pink buggy is available for rental and Desert Springs have agreed that all proceeds will be donated to the A.E.C.C.

Helen was determined to make ‘her’ day a special and fun occasion for everyone involved and she certainly managed that. The golf tournament, played in the enjoyable Texas Scramble format, was followed by a Fiesta and Family Fun event in the Crocodile Club with musical entertainment, clowns, bouncy castle, pig roast and much more. Outgoing Captain, Pat Craig, was delighted to hand over a cheque for 3.000€ to the A.M.C.A.L, saying “It is a charity I have been extremely happy to support during my year as Captain of Desert Springs Golf Club.” He also had much pleasure in presenting Helen with her new Captain’s blazer.

Then the serious business of who had won the golf became the focus and Iñaki Martin Gromaz, Director of the A.E.C.C., was called forward to help Helen. The official winning team with a score of 52 Stableford points was that of the new Captain herself partnered by Simon Coaker and two current LPGA Tour Players, Trish Johnson and Becky Brewerton. However, Helen kindly declined the trophy and instead handed the 2007 Captain’s Drive-In Trophy to the team of Mark Cretton, Rob Robinson, Robert Long and Simon Howard who were just a single point back on 51 points.

To close, Helen extended a huge thank you to everyone who had supported the golf and the Fiesta and wished the best of golfing luck to all using her pink buggy on the course!
