Club Captain News

Fellow members, as the heat of the summer reaches its height it is time to alert you to the Captain’s Charity Events scheduled for the 4th week of October. I realize it is early but members have been enquiring and flights need to be booked etc. It is schools half term as well, so the more notice the better!

  • Wednesday October 23rd: A Guided Walking Tour of Cuevas del Almanzora (not too strenuous) starting at 12pm midday with a guide from the tourist office and a translator as required, including lunch with drinks at Taperia El Castillo, a typical Spanish restaurant, which will open specially for us on the day. The price will be €20 per person to include a donation to the charity. Please contact Ellie as soon as possible to book your place.
  • Friday 25th of October: Annual Golf Skills Challenge on the practice ground starting at 11am.  This has proven to be very popular (and difficult) and Freddie has a few new challenges to further hone your skills.

  • Friday 25th of October: The Making of Desert Springs in the Crocodile Club at 5pm. This is an audio visual presentation presented by Joel Lodé. Joel is chief botanist at Desert Springs and a world renowned expert on desert flora and fauna. His talk was very well received last year and those who missed it will welcome the opportunity to hear about the 430 species of wild fauna and 400 species of autochthonous plants in Desert Springs. In all there are over 38,000 plants on the resort. Included in Joel’s presentation are many photographs of the plants, birds, animals and insects and an interesting insight into the making of the various rock formations on the course, explaining how the ecological balance and biodiversity are maintained. For those who did attend last year, many like me will look forward to seeing the presentation a second time. Nominal charge of €5 per person.

The Social Roll Up will take place in the Croc after the presentation c. 6.30pm.

  • Saturday 26th of October: Captain’s Charity Day Golf Competition and Dinner: The golf will be a Texas Scramble starting at 10am. As on the Captain’s Drive In there will be no Mulligans on sale, but for those who were not here on that day or who haven’t got one of the coveted DD badges or have lost the one they had, badges will be available for a voluntary donation.

This year we are seeking sponsors for individual holes. This can be personal, business or simply your team and a suggested rate of €50 would apply (a higher amount welcome of course). Your name will be acknowledged (or not, if you prefer) on the tee box. Holes 2 and 18 have already been booked. Please contact me directly at the email below if you are interested. I shall be back in DS on September 16th.

In the evening we will have a Gala Dinner in El Torrente at 8pm. The theme is A Masked Ball and dress code is smart casual. Masks will be provided for the ladies and a suitable item of attire for the men! A special menu has been compiled – watch out for the dessert! – and includes water and a half bottle of wine per person.

We will have a very talented singer and great music. Following the record turnout on the night of the Drive In, we anticipate another big night. So get ready for a great night of food, song and dancing. Please book at reception and contact Ellie if you want to organise a table. The price is being finalised but will be around €40/45.

Sunday 27th of October: Past Captain´s Team Challenge with Menu del Dia.

The aim of the week is to have lots of fun whilst also raising some money for the Captain’s Charity.  Desert Springs members have shown themselves to be very generous when they can identify with the charities being supported. I have been to see the local padre in Cuevas and he has assured me of the needs they have in supporting the poor in our local area, specifically in sourcing and distributing food supplies.  For my second charity please go to www.dubsimon.ie and you will get a view of the good work done on a voluntary basis for the homeless people of Dublin.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in October,
