Club Captain’s Charity

Newly elected Club Captain, Pat Craig, in electing the charity he wishes to support during his year, has decided to continue supporting the local charity ‘Asociación de Minusválidos de Cuevas del Almanzora’.

Pat stated; “Last year Freddie Beames chose this charity and considerable funds were raised for the A.M.C.A.L by the members and guests at Desert Springs. This support has made a huge difference to the Asociación and seeing the overwhelming gratitude from Juana Mulero, President of the Asociación, when she was presented with a check at Freddie’s Captain’s Day dinner, I have decided to continue supporting this very worthwhile charity.  Its work reflects my past and present commitments and is dear to my heart.  The volunteer run charity does invaluable work, helping local children with mental and physical disabilities lead better and happier lives.  As residents of Desert Springs I am conscious that we are members of a wider community and, in our privileged position, should give something as well as take from that community.  I know that I can rely on your continued help and generosity”.

The funds raised during the past year have been put to great use by the Asociación, with the money helping many families, who cannot spare the 12 Euros needed, to register with the charity.  Training has been provided to local companies to educate them on the needs and requirements of disabled employees and computers have been purchased to provide further education and enjoyment for the children.  Also, the money has helped the Asociación to purchase a minibus, which needed modifying for wheelchair access, to provide added mobility for the youngsters, allowing them to see places they may otherwise not get the chance to visit.

The first fund raising event of Pat’s Captaincy will take place on Friday 14th April on the Indiana Course at Desert Springs Resort and Golf Club; the Captain’s Drive-In. Following the golf, at the Buffet Dinner at the Resort’s El Torrente restaurant in the evening, Pat will be holding a raffle of which all proceeds will go towards the charity.
