Gastronomy Awards 2007

The El Torrente Restaurant at Desert Springs has been awarded the 32nd International Annual Trophy for Tourism, Hostelry and Gastronomy, “The New Millennium Award”, by the Trade Leaders Club at their annual international awards ceremony held in Madrid, during the course of the recent 2007 International Tourism Trade Fair in that city.

The awards ceremony and celebration of the 32nd edition of the event was attended by top restaurateurs, hoteliers and tourism professionals and members of the diplomatic corps from over 40 countries all around the world. The international quality and prestige of these unsolicited awards is underlined by quality and importance of other winners of other sectors in 2007 such as the Masai Mara National Park in Kenya and Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia.

The International Awards for the Tourist, Hotel and Catering Industry have been created to recognize the excellence of organizations and companies working in the tourism, hotel and catering industry and as a means of stimulating the healthy imitation of those working in this sector, which is of vital importance for the development of their respective countries and regions.

Desert Springs and El Torrente were represented by Executive Chef, Steve Pegg, and Managing Director of Desert Springs SL, Peter Goodhall, who received the trophy in front of an audience of some 500 invitees. In his speech of acceptance Peter Goodhall said:

“This award is especially gratifying as it came as a real surprise and was totally unsolicited! We had never dreamt of receiving such a prestigious international gastronomic award for El Torrente, the principle restaurant of the very new Desert Springs Leisure Resort and Golf Club, so early in the life of the resort and whilst in reality it is still growing.

It has however always been our ambition to achieve a new and higher level of quality right across all the very many different aspects of residential tourism development in this aspiring new region of the Almanzora in the Levante Almeriense; that includes its restaurants and their offerings. This has required a constant re-commitment, despite disappointments and costs, not least that of promotion in a sparsely populated region. This award for gastronomy is therefore particularly welcome in terms of promoting and raising the profile of the restaurant to our Spanish and overseas clientele.

My thanks must go first to Executive Chef, Steven Pegg and his team and, in particular, Head Chef Jesus Prado Hermida and Front of House Manager, Bronwen Guy. Then, of course, to the trade Leaders Club for their support and last, but not least, to whoever the unknown person or persons were, who recommended and supported El Torrente Restaurant for this award. Thank you all very much indeed!”
