Golf Course Maintenance

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT ‘NEWS LETTER’ NOVEMBER 2007

Dear Member / Property Owner,

Following on from the ‘The Golf Course Superintendents News Letter’ sent to you in September which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana course in October, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in November 2007.

OCTOBER COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Bunker Sand Placement and Edging

The outstanding bunkers that had lost sand over the summer months have now been reconditioned; ensuring bunker consistency is achieved throughout the golf course. The bunkers have also been edged as per the schedule to enhance their aesthetic appearance.

Edging Fairways

The fairways on holes 10 through 18 have been edged according to the schedule, further enhancing and defining the aesthetic appearance of these golf course grass areas.

15th Hole Modifications

Tying-in of the fairway edge leading to the newly introduced lake feature has been completed. The newly extended left hand width of fairway has ‘Grown-In’ to sufficient extent that it is now open for play. The introduction of new landscaping along the right hand side of hole 15 has been deferred to November due to an inappropriate quality of nursery stock being available from our suppliers.

Hollow Coring Greens

Due to a record amount of rain throughout the month of October (75 Litres) conditions where not suitable to carry out the schedule of hollow coring with the 6mm tines.

Tournament Set up

Additional maintenance work has taken place throughout October as per the tournament schedule. This work included additional frequency of cuts throughout the golf course, faster green speeds, heavy rolling of desert areas, and generally an increased intensity of course activities throughout the golf course. The overall appearance of the golf course has been yet again further enhanced, confirming the ability of the Indiana golf course to host yet another prestigious event.

NOVEMBER COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

Hollow Coring Traffic Area

As golf rounds increase, entrance and exit points of the green complexes need extra maintenance to maintain a healthy turf grass. These traffic areas will be hollow cored, topdressed and overseeded. White half moon metal stakes will be used to identify these areas as GUR. Please do not walk into these areas.

Hole 2 Cart Track Modification

The cart track that runs behind the 2nd green will be lowered to accommodate a new landscaping project. These works will start in November and will take two weeks to complete. During this time a temporary cart track will be placed to the left hand side of the green complex.

Hollow Coring Tees

The tees, like the greens, need to be hollow cored to help reduce soil compaction and improve air and water movement throughout the soil profile. This management programme will take one week to complete. During this period, tee markers may be moved to adjacent teeing areas so that work can continue during busy golfing periods.

Verti Draining Fairways

During the month of November the fairways will be verti-drained (aerified) to help improve soil compaction and improve air and water movement throughout the soil profile.

Topdressing and Over-Seeding Fairways

The fairways will be topdressed and overseeded. The sand top-dressing mixed with calcium and humic acids will be applied to dilute thatch and improve soil nutrient balance, whilst also creating the correct soil conditions for the new seed to germinate.

You will be able to keep up to date with the full tournament and social schedule, format and any additions, information of how to enter, and much, much more by visiting either our official website www.almanzora.com or alternatively, reading the notice boards in both the Men’s and Ladies locker rooms in the Clubhouse whilst at the Resort.
