Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter May

May 2016

Dear Member / Property Owner,

Following on from the Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter sent to you in March, which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana Course in April, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in May 2016.

Hollow Coring Greens

The hollow coring of the golf course and practice greens has been completed as per the golf course maintenance schedule.

Driving Range Tee

The verti cutting, overseeding and sand topdressing of the driving range tees was completed as per the schedule.

Green’s Collar Turfing

The program of replacing contaminated turf on the green’s collars has been taken place holes 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18.

Hollow Coring Greens

As previously advised, please be reminded that the greens will be hollow cored on Monday 16th May and the practice area will be closed on Wednesday 18th May. The hollow coring of the greens is a maintenance practice which is scheduled each year to both maintain and enhance the playing quality of the putting surfaces with which we are accustomed at The Indiana. This practice creates the required environment for strong vigorous roots to grow, the very essence of golf course maintenance.

Green’s Collar Turfing

The rye-grass green’s collars, over time,  have become contaminated with different species of grasses that cannot be controlled chemically. This turf grass will be removed mechanically and new Rye grass turf will be placed.

Poa annua Control

The natural encroachment of annual bluegrass into the putting surfaces will be controlled using plant growth regulators. Please be advised that the low percentage of Poa annuapresent in the putting green surfaces will turn yellow during this period.

2016 Greens Hollow Coring Dates

In the knowledge that all Property Owners and Members need to have as much notice as possible concerning particular aspects of the golf course maintenance schedule that may temporarily effect the playing conditions of the green’s surface, thus enabling them to plan particular holidays accordingly, please see below the remaining hollow coring date for 2016.

Monday 16th May

Monday 7th November

In Addition the Putting Green, Chipping Green and Driving Range Facility will be closed for hollow coring on Wednesday 9th November 2016.

You will be able to keep up to date with the full tournament and social calendar, format and any additions, information of how to enter, and much much more, by visiting the golf reception at Desert Springs.
