Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter September

GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT’S

NEWS LETTER

September 2017

Dear Member / Property Owner,

Following on from the Golf Course Superintendent’s News Letter sent to you in July, which was designed to keep you up to date with all of the important maintenance procedures which were scheduled to take place on The Indiana Course in August, we are pleased to be able to give you an update on the works carried out and to inform you of the schedule of works which shall take place in September 2017.

AUGUST COURSE MAINTENANCE UPDATE

Hydro Jet Greens

The process of hydro jetting of greens has been completed as per the maintenance schedule.

Fresh Water Irrigation

The use of fresh water irrigation to reduce the impact of salty irrigation water and salt accumulation on the putting surfaces was not needed due to the three days of rain we received in August.

Solid Tining Greens

The solid tining of the greens was completed as per the maintenance schedule.

Bermuda Grass Encroachment

During the summer months, warm season grasses flourish and encroach into the playable surfaces of the golf course. The second and third applications of a selective herbicide will be used.  The small areas sprayed will have a dry appearance. These areas will be overseeded in late September.

SEPTEMBER COURSE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

Green’s Aeration by DryJect

The aeration of the greens using the DryJect machine will take place on Monday 11th September. Greens 13 to 18 will be aerated before morning play and greens 1 to 12 will be completed after the golf course is closed at 13:28. Any greens not completed on Monday will be completed early on Tuesday morning before play.

Solid Tining Greens

After the DryJect aeration the greens will be solid tined with 5mm pencil tines, increasing oxygen uptake to the root system, which will reduce the negative impact of accumulated salts within the soil profile. These holes are only open and noticeable for 2 days.

Annual Golf Course Overseeding Program

The maintenance program of overseeding will commence on Monday 4th September on all rye grass areas of the golf course, to improve the turf quality and density after the summer months. During this time a local rule of “preferred lies” will be introduced. Golf Reception staff will be updated with the golf course conditions on a daily basis. The program will take 2 weeks to complete.

Driving Range Tee Renovation

The grass driving range tee will be closed from Tuesday 12th September. The tee will be verticut, overseeded and topdressed to improve the playing surface in preparation for the playing season.
