NEW YERAS EVE MIXED PAIRS: 31/12/2010
Desert Springs hosted the last tournament of the Calendar Year on a beautiful morning. A total field of 10 pairs, including 5 mixed pairs would battle for the victory before New Years Eve.
On third position, Lynne Atherton and Norman Whibley scored 32 points, one behind Gill Hudson and Rob Davies who were Runner-Up in this edition. Donna Davies and Rick Hudson claimed a tight victory with 34 points, which were sufficient to overcome their opponents.
On the overall competition, Freddie Beames and Dennis Stafford turned a magnificent scorecard with 39 points, winning once again on the Indiana Course.
The Prize Presentation was held at the Clubhouse and hosted by Club Captain Phil Lockyer.

BRADLEY'S HUGS FUN TOURNAMENT: 30/12/2010
Bradley´s Hugs Fun Tournament is one of the most enjoyable competitions within the Tournament Calendar. All players must wear a costume and there is a funds raise for charity.
The Indiana course was in pristine condition with the weather perfect for good scoring.
The competition was played in a Texas Scramble format with teams of 4 players each, with some great scores being posted.
On countback, with a Net score of 60 shots, the team formed by Gill Hudson, Rick Hudson, Patrick Wood and Sue Wood finished third on this year edition. Thank to their impressive last holes, Trevor Broughton, Paul Gutierrez, David Aris and Patrick Sweeney finished second, but still way behind the leaders. An amazing score of 51 shots was good enough to enable the team formed by Brad Vanstone, Kristopher Gray, Kenneth Lee and James Raynor Charles claim the victory.
All the players commented on how fun the event was and the great atmosphere around it, including several interesting costumes!
The prize giving hosted by Club Captain Phil Lockyer was held at the Clubhouse.

CHRISTMAS PAIRS: 28/12/2010
Ten pairs challenged the Indiana course on a beautiful mild morning at Desert Springs. The format played was a Better Ball Stableford, where the best score of the team is picked on each hole. This would indeed guarantee several good scores
After battling on the course, Dennis Stafford and Freddie Beames took the win with a total of 40 points, followed by Connor McCauley and Michael Wherlock, who finished with 38 points. One point behind, Brenda Clark-Whittle and Kristopher Gray finished third, in spite of having the lowest handicaps of the field.
The prize presentation was held at the Clubhouse and hosted by the Club Captain Phil Lockyer, Competitions Committee Member Richard Fuller and the Golf Operations Manager, José Ignacio Olea.

BOXING DAY PAIRS: 26/12/2010
The 2010 Boxing Day attracted a field of 12 players. This event is an 18-Hole Fourball Medal Competition hosted over the festive Christmas time.
Despite of the small field and cool temperatures, there were several scores below par. Dennis Stafford and Patrick Sweeney were the eventual winners shooting an impressive 69, only one shot clear from Karen Ellis and Jen Garret. Golf Club Members Frank Young and William Burns ended on third position with a net score of 71 shots, which were not enough to claim the victory this year.
Superb course conditions helped the players to achieve some good scores. Therefore it wasn´t a surprise to see several pairs playing below par on a medal format.
The prize presentation was held at the El Torrente Restaurant, hosted by Desert Springs Competition Committee Member Richard Fuller.

PRESIDENTS CUP: 06/11/2010
On November 6th Desert Springs hosted the Presidents Cup, distinguished club competition where those wanting to win would have to achieve serious scoring.
With a field of 26 players, the Indiana Course was in great shape during such Autumn morning.
Finishing third, William Burns scored 35 points which weren´t enough to claim a victory. Two points ahead, Richard Martin McLellan finished second, only one behind Michael John Neilan who was the overall winner. Michael´s 38 points were sufficient to claim the Cup and add one more win to his background.
Prizes were presented at the Clubhouse by the Desert Springs Club Committee.

ALL SAINTS DAY STABLEFORD: 1/11/2010
A good field of 37 participants played the All Saints Day Stableford on November 1st. The Indiana course was in pristine condition with the weather perfect for good scoring.
The competition was played in a Stableford format; however, not many impressive scores were posted in this occasion.
The event winner was Club Captain Philip Lockyer with 34 points Net. Two points behind were both Camillus Muldowney and Laurence Meldrum with identical rounds after countback.
This particular event is always played on the same date, and therefore golfers will have to wait until All Saints Day-2011 for revenge!
The prize giving hosted by Club Captain Helen Lavis was held at the Clubhouse.

PAST CAPTAINS TEAM CHALLENGE: 26/10/2010
On October 26th Desert Springs hosted the Past Captains Team Challenge, during a warm Fall morning. This competition is quite peculiar since every past Club Captain selects a team for that day; without a doubt it is a great way to honor those who have represented Desert Springs Golf Club.
The winning team was represented by 2009 Club Captain Barry Carver, including: Martin Vanstone, Stephen Armstrong, Barry Townsend, Camillus Muldowney, Elaine Gray, Jacob Carver, Barry Carver, Sue Wood and Nicky Vanstone.
The Prize Presentation was held at the Desert Springs Clubhouse and hosted by the present Club Captain Phil Lockyer.
AUTUMN TROPHY: 22/10/2010
The Autumn Trophy comprised a great field of 35 entrants competing in the Stableford format competition held on Friday 22nd October.
It was a beautiful sunny day at Desert Springs, the course was in perfect condition and many low handicappers had signed up to win the Trophy!
Club Championship Alan Patterson was the overall winner on countback against Camillus Muldowney, both scoring 36 points. Three points behind, third position was for Mike Thorpe who also scored a respectable 33 points.
The prize giving was held at the Clubhouse, hosted by the Club Committee Members.

DESERT CLASSIC: 16 & 17/10/2010
The 2010 Desert Classic tournament attracted a field of 15 players. This event is a 36 hole Stableford competition, played over 2 days, with the winner being the player who accumulates the best 2 day aggregate score.
The competition was very close with many good scores over the 2 days. Tony Kelly was the eventual winner with 75 points, a great performance by Tony who scored 40 points on the first day of competition. Far behind Alan Patterson was Runner-Up with an aggregate 64 points, four ahead of Patrick Dunphy and Sue Wood.
Good weather and superb course conditions helped the players to achieve some good scores.

CONSTITUTION CUP: 08/10/2010
On October 8th Desert Springs hosted the Constitution Cup on the Indiana course. It was a sunny and warm day, and the course was in perfect condition for the players.
A total of 18 players entered the tournament, prizes were given to the top 3 players on men and the winner on the ladies category. Some great scores were registered considering the competition being played on an Individual Medal format.
A very close match was held between William Burns and David Needham, who finished their round with a net 67 shots. William Burns finished first due to his great back nine. Finishing third, Richard Fuller shot a net 69.
On the ladies side, Helen Lavis had no challenge as she was the only lady on the field, and won the event with a net 77.
The prize living was held at the deck of El Torrente and hosted by Club Vice Captain Wikkie de Graaf, Competitions Committee Member Richard Fuller and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

SEPTEMBER GREENSOME: 25/09/2010
The September Greensomes comprised a total field of 12 pairs competing in the Greensomes format competition held on Saturday 25th September.
It was a beautiful sunny morning at Desert Springs, with windy conditions that made scoring a real challenge to everyone.
Alan Waldron and Mike Thorpe managed their games to play an impressive round achieving 41 points, allowing them to win the tournament by 2 points, followed by Roger Butters and David Needham in second place. Freddie Beames and Michael Coleman were third after countback, also with 39 points.
The prize giving was held at the Crocodile Club, hosted by Desert Springs Club Vice-Captain Wikkie de Graaf, Committee Member Richard Fuller and Golf Operations Manager José Ignacio Olea.

SEPTEMBER STABLEFORD: 18/09/2010
The September Stableford comprised a total field of 21 entrants competing in the Stableford format competition held on Saturday 18th September. Nonetheless, it was a beautiful sunny day at Desert Springs which helped for many good scores.
In Category 2, Susan Kenny managed her game to play a very competitive round achieving 35 points, allowing her to lead the category by 1 point, followed by Jemmy Bonner in second place and Malachy Caughlan in third, with 34 and 33 points respectively. Category 1 was once again extremely competitive; Daniel Tochón needed 40 points to win the tournament, trailed by Juan Pedro Alonso with 39 points and Frank Young with 38 points.
The prize giving was held at the Clubhouse Deck, hosted by Desert Spring’s Club Vice-Captain Wikkie de Graaf and Competitions Committee Member Richard Fuller.

THE SUMMER CHALLENGE CUP: 07/08/2010
A total of 21 golfers participated in the annual Summer Challenge Cup hosted at the Indiana Course at Desert Springs.
The great conditions of the golf course and the beautiful weather helped the players to shoot some great scores. Proof of that are the 5 players who scored more than 35 points! The overall winner of the competition was Helen Lavis, with 37 points. She was also the winner of the 1st Category, followed by Giles Pruett and David Mathewson only 1 shot behind. Of the 2nd Category the winner was Hetty Ulijn with 37 points. Runner-up was Brad Vanstone with 36 points, only one clear of Robert Puchalski.
The Nearest to the Pin contest was won by Connor McCauley and the Longest Drive contests were won by Helen Lavis and Giles Pruett respectively.
Captain Phil Lockyer and Committee Members Gerard Ulijn and Richard Fuller hosted the prize presentation at the deck in the Clubhouse.

THE PROFESSIONALS CHALLENGE CUP: 31/07/2010
The Professionals Challenge Cup was played on a very warm day at Desert Springs Resort. A good turnout of 16 couples signed up intending to “Beat the Pro´s”, which was successfully achieved by most of the participants.
There were some remarkable scores including Phil Friend/Robert Friend who finished third with 40 points. Runner-up was the couple formed by members Sue Garrod/Kirby Garrod with 41 points, but still 3 points behind the overall winners: Manuel Alonso/Gerardo Torres with a net 44 points and handicap reduction included.

DESERT SPRINGS MED-FORD: 25/07/2010
On the 25th July 2010 Desert Springs hosted the Desert Springs Med-Ford. Traditionally this competition is played under two different formats: Holes 1-9 are played in a Medal format, and holes 10-18 are played in a Stableford format. The players’ stableford score will then be deducted from their net medal score to give the final score.
On such a warm summer day, there were some great scores battled to win the competition and as usual, the Indiana Course was in outstanding conditions for the event.
There were 2 players tied for 3rd place with 19 points. Philip Lockyer finally took the third position on countback over Richard Dunphy. In second place, with 18 points, Richard Fuller, who played very good golf despite an awful last hole. The winner of the competition was Jacob Carver, who shot a terrific 71 gross and finished with a total of 12 points: Good job Jacob!.

DIRECTOR'S TROPHY: 05/06/2010
The 2010 Director´s Trophy was played by a final field of 16 players, including 7 visitors. This event was played on the Indiana Course under an Individual Stableford format, with only one category.
The competition was very close, although nobody could score well on such a warm morning. Pablo Lario was the eventual winner with 30 points followed by Richard Fuller, who was second with 29 points after countback. Freddie Beames finished third with the same score, allowing him to still earn a prize.
There was a Nearest to the Pin contest on the 17th Hole, which was won by Committee Member Richard Fuller.
Good weather and superb course conditions helped visitors to enjoy their visit to Desert Springs.

SPRING CUP: 15/05/2010
Extremely windy conditions were present at the Indiana Course during the celebration of the Spring Cup. A total field of 26 players divided into two categories entered the event, knowing that any score above 30 points could well be worth the title.
In the second category Alberto Quevedo González was third after countback, with a net 30 points. With amazingly tight results William Burns finished runner-up with 31 points, after a countback that gave the victory to Chris Frost.
In the first category, Captain Phil Lockyer was last on the podium scoring 30 points, two less than Roger Butters who was second. In this ocassion, Past Captain Freddie Beames took the victory with 33 points and also claimed the overall title.
Noel Gilbert won a Nearest to the Pin contest, prize presented together with a raffle held at the Clubhouse Gallery.
OPEN PAIRS COMPETITION: 02/05/2010
A bright and warm day, with the golf course in perfect playing conditions awaited the field of 14 teams that had entered this tournament.
With prizes being awarded to the top 4 teams, there was all to play for! The results were very close, as the eventual four top placed teams finished within 1 point from one another, a countback was required to decide the evetual winners!
The final standings were as follows:-
In first place with 37 stableford points Jim Marling and Mark Robinson, followed by second place Hilary O´Herlihy and Bill O´Herlihy, third place Kevin Cademy-Taylor and Lynn Cademy-Taylor and finally in fourth place, Juan Gras Gallardo and Fco. Javier Segura Blanes with 36 stableford points

MAY DAY STABLEFORD: 01/05/2010
A field of 20 players battled to win the competition set in two different categories.
Desert Springs Vice-Captain Wikkie de Graaf returned a winning score of 39 stableford points. This score also enabled her to achieve first place in Category Two of the event, followed in second place by Lynne Cademy-Taylor with 34 stableford points and third place Brendan Sheehan with 31 stableofrd points.
Category One was decided by countback. Desert Springs Club Captain Philip Lockyer beat Susan Kenny into first place with a score of 36 stableford points with Hilary O´Herlihy finishin in third place with 35 stableford points.
The prize presentation was hosted on the Deck at the Clubhouse by Club Captain Phil Lockyer and Competitions Committee Members Gerard Ulijn and Richard Fuller.

THE INDIANA MASTERS: 17 & 18/04/2010
The Indiana Masters attracted a field of 26 players. The event is a 36-hole stableford points competition played over two days, with the winner being the player with the best two day aggregate score.
The competition was closely contested with many good scores posted over the two days. Michael Neilan was the eventual winner with 77 stableford points, a great performance. An impressive first round amassing 42 points gave him sufficient margin to claim the final victory.
Besides the Overall competition, two categories were differentiated:
In category 1, Mike Thorpe enjoyed victory with 73 stableford points, 7 ahead of Spaniards Daniel Tochón and Juan Pedro Salmerón.
In category 2, overall winner Michael Neilan scored 77 stableford points, 12 ahead of runner-up Freddie Beams with third position going to Michael Wherlock with 61 stableford points.
Good weather and superb course conditions helped the players to achieve some impressive scores. Therefore it wasn´t surprise to see several handicap cuts during such a golfing weekend.

THE CAPTAIN'S DRIVE-IN: 09/04/2010
A field of 19 teams entered the 2010 Captain's Drive-In.
Club Captain Phil Lockyer was an excepcional ambassador and turned the tournament into an enjoyable experience for all participants.
A morning cocktail was served at the Cave Bar, where players could contribute to charity by buying “Mulligans”. The Amarillo (Yellow) theme was present throughout the day with a vast amount of yellow shirts, trousers socks and others. The Drive-In was held on the 1st Tee, followed by the tournament shotgun start.
As you could expect from competitions played under Texas Scramble format, there were many great scores. The winning team formed by Rory McCartney, Elizabeth McCartney, Margaret Allison and Robert Allison returned 51 points, which was only good enough after countback. After a magnificent golf round, the team formed by Robert Stillwell, Ryan Stillwell, William Burns and Tom Locke finished runners-up.
The prize presentation was held at the Crocodile Club.

STABLEFORD COMPETITION: 07/04/2010
Desert Springs hosted this newly introduced Stableford Competition, designed to walk aside the Club Championship.
With a field of 29 players, it was proved that both stroke play and Stableford competitions can be perfectly combined at the Indiana Course. Prior to the “Honours Dinner”, Richard Dunphy posted the winning score with 33 stableford points. After a countback between Susan Kenny and Patrick Wood, both of whom amassed a totoal of 31 stableford points, it was Susan Kenny that took the honor of second place.
Prizes were presented by Captain Philip Lockyer at El Torrente Restaurant, where all winners received warm applause from their fellow competitiors.

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP & HANDICAP SALVER: 06 & 07/04/2010
Two days of beautiful sunshine welcomed players to one of the most important events in the Club's tournament calendar, bringing together some of the best players within the Club for this two-day competition.
The Indiana Course was in magnificent condition, with its usual fast greens and magnificent desert planting in full bloom.
In the Ladies section of the Club Championship, past Captain Helen Lavis took first place with a gross score for the two days of 183, six shots ahead of second place Liz McCartney.
In the Men's section of the Club Championship, Alan Patterson came back steady through the second round to win with a gross score for the two days of 164 shots, five ahead of runner-up Mike Thorpe.
Results were very different in the Handicap Salver! The Ladies Handicap Salver was won by Elizabeth McCartney with a two day nett score of 151, followed in second place by Brenda Clark-Whittle with 161.The Men's Handicap Salver was won by Spaniard Sergio Saavedra with a magnificent second round helping him to a two day nett score of 140. Despite leading after day one, Paul Taylor finished runner-up with 146. Prizes were presented by Captain Philip Lockyer after the “Honours Dinner”, where the winners received a warm applause from the rest of the participants.

THE EASTER CUP: 04/04/2010
The Easter Cup comprised a field of 60 players competing in a Stableford format.
The conditions of the Indiana course were superb. Despite an early morning breeze, all participants could play in short sleeve shirts during this mild spring morning.
Men were split into two categories according to their handicaps: In the Silver Category, Barry Carver won the competition on countback, after tying with Robert Allison at 33 points. Third was Richard McLellan with 31 points. In the Gold Category Stephen Armstrong won the competition, also on countback; 34 points were enough to defeat Gerardo Torres and with a further two points back, Mike Thorpe finished third with 32.
Ladies achieved better scores today, as Ann Thorpe was the overall winner with 37 points. Elizabeth McCartney came close with 36 points, and Lynne Taylor completed the podium with 31 points.
The prize giving took place at El Torrente, and was held by Club Captain Philip Lockyer, who is now commencing his year of captaincy at Desert Springs Resort & Golf Club.

ST. PATRICK´S DAY BOWL: 17/03/2010
On the 17th March 2010 Desert Springs hosted the St. Patrick´s Day Bowl, under Individual Stableford format. A competitive field of 26 players battled to win the competition and as usual, the Indiana Course was in outstanding conditions for the event. Having a vast amount of low handicappers would guarantee phenomenal golf through Wednesday morning.
In the ladies section Jean Sheehan was runner-up on countback, just one point behind winner Lynne Taylor. Moving to the gents David Needham finished third with 33 points, only one point behind Freddie Beams who had his handicap cut to 13,9. The winner of the St. Patrick´s day Bowl was Roger Butters with an impressive 39 points score; considering the overall scores and adjustments Roger will be cut down from 7,7 to 6,3... Congratulations Roger!

THE IRISH INTERNATIONAL: 13/03/2010
Desert Springs has recently hosted The Irish International, one of the club’s annual trophies. 28 competitors entered the event which was an individual stableford competition. Following the tradition, Ireland played against the Rest of the World team, hoping for a first-time win.
The sunny weather and the outstanding conditions of the Indiana course helped all the players to ensure a great morning and post competitive results. Barry Carver, Club Captain, returned a strong 34 points which gave him a 2 points lead over Sergio Saavedra. Third place resulted in a tie with 31 points, even after countback, between Paul Taylor and Jim Kelly.
In the team competition, Rest of the World successfully defended the title against the uninspired Irish team. Barry Carver received the Irish International Trophy, and wished the best of luck to the Irish for the next edition.

ANDALUCIA DAY TOURNAMENT: 27/02/2010
On February 27th Desert Springs hosted the Andalucía Day Tournament, which was played on the Indiana course under magnificent weather conditions.
It was a very tight battle until the final holes, with two players tied at the top of the leaderboard. On countback, Helen Lavis finished second with 32 points and Laurence Meldrum won the tournament and received a big applause from the audience.
As for other contests Mike Wherlock won the Nearest to the Pin challenge, and Helen Lavis hit a very long shot at Eagles Back to win the Longest Drive.
On a different note, we have to congratulate Patrick Dunphy for his impressive eagle on Par 4-18th.
The prize presentation was held at the terrace hosted by Desert Springs Assistant Director of Golf Alfonso Castiñeira and Committee Member Brian Chapman.
