Title: Sheffield Collegiate Academy set to return to Desert Springs for pre-season warm weather cricket training camp

Between Saturday 28th – Tuesday 31st March, Sheffield Collegiate Academy, for a second consecutive year, will complete a three (3)-day warm weather training camp at Desert Springs Resort in preparation for the forthcoming season.

Founded in 1881 and nestled just a few hundred metres away from Dore and Totley train station in South Yorkshire, England, Sheffield Collegiate has spawned some stellar cricketing names, Joe Root and Michael Vaughan being the highest-profile among them. So useful was their camp last April that they are now set to return with more players and extra coaches.

The training camp will comprise sixteen (16) talented cricketers aged 13-17 years, accompanied by four (4) coaching staff, all of whom will be spending their time completing a specific and carefully planned programme of numerous training sessions each day covering technical skills, fielding drills, bowling and batting, strength and conditioning and both individual and group activity.

Grass net practice will take place at the Cricket Academy. Strength and conditioning work, running, speed and agility work will be completed at the Cricket Ground and Gym at the Sierras Sports Club and the academy players shall compete in competitive T20 matches at the Desert Springs Cricket Ground on Monday 30th March.

Title: Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club complete pre-season training camp at Desert Springs Resort

Thirteen (13) members of Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club, accompanied by Head Coach Josh Varley, Tour Manager Tony Miller and Assistant Tour Manager/Coach Chris Stewart, are now back in England having completed a successful 3-day training camp between Thursday 11th – Sunday 14th April at Desert Springs Resort, Europe’s only international award-winning luxury family resort and championship desert golf course with its very own dedicated Cricket Ground and Academy, in the Almanzora region of Almeria, Andalucía in south-east Spain.

Tony Miller, Tour Organiser and Coach remarked of the training camp at Desert Springs;

“This has been the first overseas trip we have run for juniors at Sheffield Collegiate. Our players have benefitted enormously from the use of the grass nets and from being able to train far more intensively than when at home.

Having two matches on such a good ground was the icing on the cake and the top quality playing surface made for excellent practice matches.

The boys bonded well, and the quality of the accommodation meant that they were really comfortable. Having only a short walk from the apartments to the cricket facilities was also a bonus. We will be looking to repeat this trip!”

Grass net practice, both bowling and batting took place at the Cricket Academy. Strength and conditioning work, running, fielding, speed and agility work was completed at the Cricket Ground.

To conclude the training camp, Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club competed in a T20 Match against Dunottar School on Saturday 13th April.

Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club players said of their pre-season training experience at Desert Springs Resort:

“This was my first time on a coaching camp abroad and it was great. I loved our apartments and the grass pitches were brilliant. Playing two matches on grass before the season starts is so helpful. I would really like to come to Desert Springs again.”

Michael Goodchild

“I have been training indoors with Yorkshire but being on grass and playing outdoor matches was ten times better! I enjoyed being able to walk around the resort safely and when we ate in the club house the food was delicious. It was a great trip for the club and we should go home better players.”

Sam Meadows

“Great wickets on the match ground and in the nets. I have had a brilliant time practicing hard and playing games. Desert Springs feels a really friendly place and it is very chilled. I would like to come again.”
