The Ladies Golf Union has appointed Desert Springs Resort and Golf Club, the international award winning family leisure resort located in Almeria, South East Spain, as it’s winter training base for its’ elite GB&I Training Squad.
Desert Springs provides a wide range of quality relaxation and sports facilities and exclusive luxury homes set beside the emerald green fairways of the stunning and unique championship desert golf course, the Indiana.
Speaking of the new arrangement, CEO of the LGU Lesley Burn said,
"The Ladies’ Golf Union are delighted to be working with Desert Springs, the facilities the resort offer are fantastic and the GB&I Squad are gaining greatly from the time spent warm weather training at the venue".
The GB&I Training Squad consists of the top women players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The players are preparing for 3 prestigious team events in 2007/8. In May they will represent Great Britain and Ireland in the Commonwealth Team Championships to be held in South Africa, then a match against Continental Europeans in the Vagliano Trophy. Finally in 2008 the team will play against the USA in a historic Curtis Cup to be played at the Old Course, St Andrews.
The squad will be back in action training at Desert Springs in February, accompanied by their Captain, Mary McKenna, one of golf’s most successful amateur players.

Former England and Walker Cup Captain and designer of the Indiana course Peter McEvoy was extremely enthusiastic about the agreement and said,
“Desert Springs can be presented to test the skills of the best players. I am thrilled that as prestigious a body as the LGU have selected the Indiana course and its Golf Academy as its winter training base”.
